Help me pick a target catridge

Don't know way all keyboard junkies want to drink cool aid? If choosing 6.5 bullets why not just use .260 case ? will push 140 grain bullets at over 2800 fps without stressing case or barrel life. All components easily accessible. A .308 case can be necked down or or straight 260 can be purchased. Life does not have to be like a box of chocolates ! " And that is all I got to say about that " LOL

Have the 260 REM also BUT the Cute little Creed is maybe better ? Bud -RJ

260 case is not optimized for high BC bullets while still fitting in a standard 308 mag. The 6.5CM is.

Nothing wrong with the 260, if you've already got one great, use it. But there is no good reason to buy a 260 if you're just starting out and shooting targets is the goal, if for no other reason than rifles and factory ammo are less available in 260. Now, I'm not saying people who just WANT a 260 shouldn't get one, I'm just saying if you're trying to pick a cartridge based on the criteria of shooting targets at 1000, 6.5CM is the easy button option.

The 6.5 CM case volume is about the same size as the .243 Winchester and .308 Winchester, so magnum primers are seldom required. Many handloaders use match-grade primers, although this is mostly what anthropologist Horace Miner would call a “body ritual of the Nacirema.” (“Nacirema” is, of course, “American” spelled backward.) If you can find match primers, and using them gives you a warm, fuzzy feeling, go for it. But they’re probably not necessary.

The CR case is an improved design to the .308 ,short and square but is not balisically any better. At the time I was useing 260 in F-Class Lapua did not make brass for CR or .260 . I always said if Lapua didnt make the brass or one that could easily be turned into the calibre I would not shoot it :>} BUT now they make a small primer hole in 6.5 CR so yahoo!!

I'm sorry I did miss one small point for casual target shooters. It just never dawned on me that anyone would plink at targets with factory ammo !! My bad
There are many shooters at our club who only shoot factory ammo, in fact it would be hard to say that most hand load, I think more shoot factory stuff.

Most of the hunters I know use factory ammo, but most serious shooters I know handload. Most of them, that's the only way to afford to shoot a lot. - dan

That was a big part of the marketing scheme for the 6.5cm for sure...semi affordable match ammo.
Reality though, nobody is going to find a rifles potential with factory ammo.
Got a lot of new shooters out, so that's a very good thing.
Only factory ammo I've shot in the last 20 years is rimfire, shotgun, and cheap surplus centerfire, I don't have the money or the patience to buy factory ammo of any sort.

#UPDATE# So I picked up a used Savage 10tr in 308 win from one of the site sponsors, put it in a MDT XRS chassis and mounted up an Arken SH4 from another site sponsor. At the range this morning I got a .72" 4 shot group then a .82" 5 shot group at 100yds. I'm super jazzed with the results so far and can't wait to stretch it's legs once this snow storm let's up. The load I'm using is 168 Sierra TMK with enough IMR 4064 to get 2740fps.
Thanks for all your input.
