So I narrowed my hunting rifle down to a T3 lite stainless now what caliber? First off it will be used on(in order of frequency) black tail, white tail, mulies, black bear, and moose. My first thought was 30-06 as I shoot a Garand and already have dies for reloading. Good all around caliber right? Then I read that the recoil is a ##### as it weighs 4 pounds less than my garand :). So then I am thinking I like what I read about 7mm-08 for less recoil but will it humainly take a moose? I have taken a very large bull moose with 30-06 but that was 180gr partition.

I only have money for one dedicated hunting rifle (too many other toys) so what do you think?

FYI I have a M14 and the garand but I don't fancy humping either one all day so thats why I decided on the t3 lite.

Thanks guys.

The 7-08 will take a moose if you do your part, but if your already set up for 30.06 go with that. I've shot the T3 in 300wsm and it's not that bad.

270wsm or a 25-06.
Nice all around flat shooting with light recoil.

My hunting partner has this gun in .270wsm. With that hard rubber pad after 10 shots or so at the range he is sore. I think .270 wsm would have the same amount if not more recoil than a .30-06. In terms of case size the .270 wsm is basically a short magnum .30-06 given that regular .270 uses a .30-06 case necked down to .270. That being said given that this is going to be a hunting rifle I would not worry about recoil, bench gun different story. It is weird but true that you never really feel recoil when you are hunting. Go with your original decision of .30-06 and get a recoil pad.

I would say 30-06 since you already load for it, but then again you have a 308 (M14) that you should load for as well, so why not go 308? You can share bullets and powder, and all it will cost you extra is a different shell holder or two, dies and case length gauges.
Either way, a good recoil pad is a great idea.
Congrats! You've picked a great rifle, and you'll be congratulating yourself next hunting season too.
