So I moved my EOTech 512 and 3X Vortex magnifier over to the Tavor. I love the set up and used it in the sandbox (552) and on my M4 once back home for IPSC and other range fun. So anyway it did take long before I tried some drills and what do you know.... tore the skin up on my fingers pretty good on the mounting screw of the EOTech. After looking at it a little further I can see how I am destined to do this even overhand. Fine if taking my time on the range but I can see this repeating itself under pressure. If the 3X were removed and moved the EOTech back I am sure it would solve the issue but my old eyes like some zoom.

So the question is what do you folks recommend? I am leaning toward one of these 1-4 / 1-6 / 1-8 optics with the lack of a flared out objective lens. It seem that lack of a flared out objective lens end would further reduce the chance of hand contact.

Fire away guys. Might see the old glass up on the EE soon.

The Specter is a little more $ than I wanted to spend. Would like to keep it under 1k if possible. Perhaps Vortex or Bushnell. I think back and The EOTech and 3x Vortex set me back $800 and would like to keep it in the same price range. Even the ACOG seems a bit outside my price range.

As for what drills. Anything that requires one to #### the rifle in a hurry. If you think one has no need to train like that then please tell me why. I am interested as perhaps I am looking into this too deep and I should just stick to the setup I have now.

So you are transitioning out of RDS completely to reticle then? The Bushnell AR 1-4 illum with the toggle is quite popular here. Economical for sure. Only thing I don't like is the narrow eye relief. A problem for rapid acquisition esp for guys like us with old eyes!

I have Burris mtac 30 1-4 on mine. Love it. Use it for 3 gun / multi gun . Used to have Bushnell 1-4 with quick flip, not quite as good (glass quality).

If you're not wedded to the idea of buying new, I've picked up a like-new TA11 ACOG and a couple of pretty-much-new Elcan OS4s on the EE for under a grand each.... The OS4s especially do come up on the EE at just over a grand, and seem to sit for a while at that price. I'd personally recommend either of those optics, if you're OK without having the ability to go 1x

How about an Elcan Specter DR? 1-4 and the design fits the blocky look of the Tavor well.
My optic of choice if I can part with $2000+!!

What kind of drills are you running that involves forceful contact with the optics and mounts?
you know I love my specterdr, but...

I ran some pretty fast drills with the tavor and a ta11 horseshoe, i was always the fastest on steel, the safety was even back on before the other ones had let off their shots.
acogs are really fast

Yeah but you also didn't mention that someone's been practicing lots on their own AR500 tree! Gee, I wonder who?

I really like clarity of the chevron on the ACOG but Moe did say the ACOG was out of his price range.

that dueling tree has proven to be the best training tool i ever purchased, pistol and rifle.

Yes, it is but costly on the pocketbooks as you can mag dump your range bag in no time!!

lol you should have seen me do a beowulf dump on steel during the tavor course. too bad tv didnt film that. prone, in the mud, running the old girl like a boss, nearly ripped the target off the chains.

Gor for a 2nd hand ELCAN M145.

A good friend of mine ruins the 145 on his Tavor, and loves it

I'm an Elcan fanboy, but the only rifle I would bother to spend the money on for a C79/145 for is a Colt Canada to have clone status.

They were worth the $300-400 people were selling them for before Colt Canada started selling civilian clones, but now the demand has out stripped supply and artificially drove the used market up. They are really not worth it.

Ya, I paid $300US for my 145, came with a coyote brown case, kill flash, lens covers, etc, and manual. Sure it's used, but it's in great shape. AND is wickedly accurate

EDITs* Some on ebay right now are $1400, but appear to be new.

Thanks you all for so much feedback. I count 8 makes and models you guys suggested there to look into. Will take some time tonight and look them over.

Why not replace the large thumbscrew with the smaller, lower profile Allen screw if you're happy with your current setup?
