Another good one for you. Plan on picking up a yote/target rifle. Shooting 300 yards, target shooting out too 500 max. Will be carrying around in the bush hunting.

Stuck between what sounds like an awesome rifle for the deal,

Savage 12 FCV .223 Rem

and what seems like another good hunting rifle that would be easy to carry but maybe not so much of a target gun past 300

Remington 700 SPS Tactical .223 Rem

I like that they both have heavy barrels, I know the savage will be a shooter but at 8" longer barrel the ease of carrying, aiming and moving the Remington is appealing.

The savage is 900 the Remington is 840 so about the same price.

I personally find a 26" heavy barreled rifle far too clumsy for beating through the bush. Others may not have a problem with it though.

Undoubtedly the 26" barrel will give you more velocity, less muzzle blast and perhaps a better balanced rifle for the range. However 500 yards is not far enough for the drop in muzzle velocity to really matter.

I would take the SPS tac.

Another option has arisin, trying to decide between the rem 700 sps tactical in 223 or the mossburg preditor in 223/556 both seem to preform the same. Any one know how high the predator cheek comb is ?

I'd look for a good sporter weight for the carry. Top it with a decent scopes and it will shoot small groups from the bench.

WBY Vanguard, Tikka or Savage comes to mind.

So many savage rifles. I wasn't a fan of my vanguard. Tikka is x2 the price of savage for same quality (except bolt)

Im looking for a heavy barrel, preff 22 inch or smaller that I can lug in the bush or put a clover on paper.

I carried a custom Voerre with a 30" barrel for 15 years, up and down hills, thick bush and thin. Didn't bother me much at all.

beauty of being a young chap. Nothing is all that bad yet.

Well enough, but maybe a "young chap" would appreciate the second 3 shot group from my lightweight 223. The first group was similar. Just sayin' ....... :)

I can't think of one part of a Tikka that isn't markedly better than a Savage, and I've got nothing against Savage.

Personally I am with Supercub on this one. I have had heavy barreled varmint rifles and they shot great but were pigs. I have switched to sporter weights now because I realize they can shoot as good but are in a handy package.

If you are only going to shoot paper from a bench it would be a different story.

I own a model 25, they are not bad weight wise, accurate too. Bolt is small cartridge specific so a little on the small side. Barrel is medium weight and is (was) fluted. For me it was a money choice between that and the model 10 predator. In hindsight i should have purchased the Predator. Another option in the savage line is the 110.
