Hey all,
Just learned I was going to move to a new place. Thing is they have a 600m rifle range, and I have no LR rifle. So here I am, in the market for one more toy. I know I want an AICS stock and they require a rem 700 barreled action. But I am tied between three contenders.

1- Rem LTR
2- SPS Varmint
3- SPS Tactical

I am left wondering which one should find it's place into my locker. Is there a real difference ? Is the LTR really worth the extra money? What pieces would I need to change on the SPS to make it competive with a rifle worth twice as much ??
 
Since your going to loose the stock anyway (which I believe is the biggest difference in cost between the SPS and the LTR, along with the finish) I would go with the SPS Varmint model for the added barrel length.

I assume your going with a .308win. If your going with the .223, I'd reconsider because Remington does not have a good twist rate for heavy bullets in this caliber which is important for long range shooting. The .243win is a good choice for long range as well.

If you are swapping out the stock anyways go with one of the SPS versions as that is the only real difference between the two. The decision will be based then on the length of the barrel you want. If you are going with a .223 I'd go with the tactical version though to get the faster twist rate.
 
I would say that you need to consider twist as well - esp if you are looking at a .223 - My pick would be to get the cheaper tacticals or a 700 P and sell the stock and put it toward a new AICS stock. You can get a fair amount for the tactical stocks (HS Precision) if you sell it esp if it is a new take off. Plus you will have the right twist for your barrel.
 
Isn't the twist rate of the SPS Varmint in .223 1/12? No good if you want to load the heavy bullets for long range. Personally, I'd just get the SPS Tactical in .308 and be done with it, no need to double the cost of the rifle by adding an AI stock. I've heard lots of reports of people getting half MOA out of the box. If you really want the AI stock than I'd get the SPS Varmint in .308. You can't beat the price, especially if you're using it for a starting point in a custom build.

Again, if you're set on the AI stock than I wouldn't even consider the LTR, since it's pretty much the stock that increases the price of it.

What do you need to change on an SPS for it to compete with rifles worth double? I'd say that all you have to do is adjust the trigger yourself and give it a decent bedding job.
