Looking to buy a scope for long range shooting(1000yds). It will be mounted on a 308. If you had $800 to spend, what scope would you buy?

Well you're a couple hundred shy of a Leupold. That said you may want to try the "higher end" Bushnell Elite series, I believe its the 3200?, mildot reticle etc.

imarco,

For that kimd of money, I would hands down go with a Bushnell 4200 6-24X40 model 42-6242M. It has a Mil-Dot reticle, semi target turrets, a good long sunshade and A/O with paralx adujustment from 10 yards to infinity. I believe that this scope retails in the $500.00 range new.

I am not the

biggest Bushnell fan but I would go with a Elite 4200 8-32X. I think you will need a base with 20 MOA to make it out there. I priced one out in MB and it was around 640.00 + taxes. I personally feel there is no such thing as to much magnification. I just read today where some BR shooters 100-200 yard are boosting there fixed 36X scopes as high as 55X. That would be my choice. You could just about have 2 for the price of a Leupold.

I love the Busnell scopes, the reason I recommended the 6-24 is it comes from the factory with a Mil-Dot reticle and it is top quality. Also, I never thought the 3200 10X tactical could get more publisity, but last night I picked up the brand new Barrett firearms first Annual magazine. It shows the 10X Bushnell as one of the factory installed scopes, they refer to it as "Barrett's Factory Scopes". In this particular article, it was mounted on a model M99 .50 and it held zero at all distances. Based on that test alone, I would have no reservation about buying a third one to add to my collection. Bushnell Elite series scopes are a very good scope for the money.

BTW, you are not getting a Burris XTR for 800. I should know, i have one. I will say though that it is a really nice scope! I really like it!
