My buddy is going to buy a 17HMR in the next day or so and wants to know what he should get.

I don't know a lot about 17's so figured I'd ask you guys for some ideas. He doesn't want to spend a fortune but has some money to drop into the gun.

He was looking at a Marlin 917VSF (stainless fluted barrel) and a tasco 2.5-10x42 mildot on top of it with weaver rings, a rockmount pivot bipod on the bottom. He basically wants to shoot paper out to about 200yards and eventually shoot some gophers when he gets the chance.

Would this setup do the trick or should he consider something different? He is dead set on the fluted barrel though.

thanx

The marlin is as good a choice as any, I would also strongly consider the savage (the accutrigger is sweeeeeeet!)

The scope: WRONG choice for the intended use. he is gonna want at least double that magnification, more than that is better. My .17's wear a 6-32 and a 10-40. I would strongly suggest a minimum of 24X.

I have the Marlin 917VSF my self and like the gun a lot. I have a bushnell Banner 6-18x50 on it and it is quite accurate with this set up. I have modified the trigger down to about 2 lbs by simply replacing a few springs in it.

Another good choice would be the Savage .17's or the CZ 452. Of all these guns I would say the CZ by far has the best worksman ship and is of the best quality. Accuracy is probably going to be preatty close between all three.

Best thing to do would be to go to your local gun shop and check out a couple of them and see which one you like best :)

As far as rifle choice goes, any of the contenders are a good choice. I have shot almost all and they are ALL accurate. The savage fit me like a glove but may be different for your friend. Pick one that feels good since they are around the same price.
As far as scopes go, try for higher mag. for paper punching. Mine wears a 3-9x40, but I shoot gophers mostly. Go for ATLEAST a 15 power.

I have a savage heavy barrel with accutrigger
I use a tasco 6x24 seems to work great nice and accurate

I have a Savage 93R17 FVSS with a Tasco 6-24 varmit scope and am very very happy. Very good accuracy and the scope is actually pretty good for a Tasco.

I have the savage 93R17 F with a bushnell banner 3.5-10x36mm scope. If he wants to shoot anything out to 200 yards consistanty i'd be getting atleast a 6-18x magnification scope. I like my 3x9 on anything up to 100 yards, a little more power would be nice for shooting groundhogs at 150-200yards.

if i was him i'd be getting the savage or the marlin. Both guns shoot really good for the price, i couldnt justify spending like 700$ on a cz or ruger just for rodent hunting so i got the savage(spend like 430$ altogether with gun and scope). The trigger on the savage is way better then the marlin trigger too and thats what sold me on the savage.

The Marlin is a great rifle, I've got the 917V.....but have your buddy save the money for a bipod, build a few shooting bags out of rice and old jeans, and spend the money on a Rifle Basix trigger for it. I put one in this winter and it is sweet....waiting for a new rear takedown screw before I can put it all together and test it out!

+ 1 on higher scope magnification......get into the x20's

Thanks for all the information and suggestions guys.......my buddy ordered his rifle earlier today. He took your advice and went with the Marlin fluted barrel and a Tasco 6-24x42 scope.

I'll let you know how he does with it.

Now I just have to convince him to let me "test drive" the thing!!!!;)
