Hi all

Been shooting 7.62X39 in a sks, love the round, cheap, easy to find, etc…

Thought I would upgrade the sks to a different platform and that is when my head started to spin.

Started reading up on different platforms 858, vz-58, XCR, seems it can be tough doing internet search’s, some products good some bad, gremlins everywhere, difficult to know if problem still exists or if it was sorted out in later models.

If I was to buy a new product today what semi-auto rifles in 7.62X39, available in Canada, non-restricted would be worth looking at.

Mainly shoot out bush, max range 200yards, not planning to get into any competitive shooting or the Zombies to storm the house anytime soon. In the end am I just better sticking with a SKS?

There are tonnes of options to consider, and many have a valid point on saying stick with the SKS and buy lots of ammo! This is the real expense in having a shooting hobby, feeding the darn things!
But if you are looking at branching out from the SKS and trying new things to play with, plenty of options to look at, anywhere from your $250.00 SKS or your $3175.00 Keymod XCR-L Tiger stripe rifle!! If you have any questions on the platform regarding the XCR, any CZ 527, even the SKSs let me know I am more than happy to help out answering any questions to help. I have listed a handful of options below to consider, lots to look at and choose from.

SKS -> $250.00 SEMI-AUTO / LOW COST / IRON SIGHT / LOTS OF AFTERMARKET OPTIONS

Nornico M14 -> $824.99 SEMI-AUTO / MEDIUM COST / ITON SIGHT / OPTICS AND AFTERMARKET AVAIABLE

Kodiak Defense SKS15 -> $849.99 SEMI-AUTO / MEDIUM COST / ALREADY MODDED UP SKS

CZ 527 Carbine -> $1019.99 BOLT ACTION / MEDIUM COST / IRON SIGHT / COMPACT / EXCELLENT ACCURACY

CSA VZ58 -> $1375.00 SEMI-AUTO / MEDIUM COST / IRON SIGHT / TONNES OF AFTERMARKET OPTIONS

Robinson Armament XCR-L Platform -> Starting at $2805.00 SEMI-AUTO / HIGH COST / VERY MODULAR / CALIBER CONVERSIONS AVAILABLE ( E-mail for all the goodies, to many to list! )

Had a look at your website the CSA VZ58 looks sweet, people here have been suggesting the 858, is there much difference between the two?

Small differences, functionally the same rifle. Different folks doing the work with some different parts is the big thing. The CSA rifles are all new manufactured parts where as the CZ 858s were built with older surplus parts. ( not that surplusy though....pretty sure that's a word?? ) CZ 858s can be found on EE, at the moment thanks to certain individuals in certain areas of a certain governing body , they have become harder to acquire..... CSA's trickle in here and there and can be found in shops like ours.

Lots of options to look at as well if you are wanting to go in that direction, feel free to shoot me an email or give me a call. More than happy to discuss everything with you.

I've owned a whole bunch of Vz-platform guns. My personal experience is that the CSA guns are cosmetically nicer, but functionally inferior.... if there's been a problem, it's 9 times out of 10 been with a CSA, not a Cz/Vz.

I'd take a Cz858 in a second over a CSA. Only advantage to CSA aside from nicer finish is that they are available in shorter barrel lengths... but you said you wanted NR. Stick with an actual Vz (ie Cz858, or one of the rarer NR CZH guns) if you're buying NR.

CSA's also have chrome lined barrels. CSA's are picky with mags (stick to their readily available factory made CSA ones and you're good) and otherwise there aren't really any problems with them. I did hear they improperly heat treated a couple of receivers in like 2011 or something, but they do have a 5 year factory warranty so should problems arise they'll take care of you. I haven't had any problem with mine aside from trying to use Cz mags in them, which I think have stronger spring pressure or something.
