Looking for some advice and help. I've been an avid hunter for years (mostly large game) and always had an interest in long-range shooting. I've just picked up a Savage 110BA .338 LM - perhaps not an ideal hunting gun at the weight but I will definitely try it out (current gun is Tikka .270)

That said, I want optics that would suit both a hunting and range scenario. I've always wanted to shoot out 500+ yards (my goal is to be able to hit at 1000). My budget is around 1k but open to suggestions from the experienced shooters here. Reading the internet and scouring forums is overwhelming and I realize asking in a post will get different opinions - but thats fine with me!

I live in Ontario and also open to suggestions on ranges/clubs where I can shoot 300+. I'm not really interested in competing at this time, just want to shoot for fun. Ontario seems to have limited ranges for this.

Thanks all in advance, these forums are a gold mine of information!

I like the Zeiss conquest myself... you can also check out the vortex line of scopes, they are quite good for the money.... I also live in ontario.... not sure where you are but the connaught ranges in Ottawa I believe has 300 yard capability....

One of the most fun forms of long range shooting to me is to set up some "targets" ie. pop cans etc with a backdrop behind them.... take a gps reading and mark the waypoint then just head up 3-4-500 yards into the hills and waste ammo trying to knock 'em down... this can easi;y be done safely in abandoned or inactive quarries and locations like that....

I just picked up a Sightron Siii 8-32x56 LRMOA that I plan to put on my 110BA in .338 Lapua. It is currently on a custom ATRS .308 but will switch over when the S+B Pmii arrives. I think the Sightron ( which costs about a grand so works for your budget ) will look and work well on the Big Boomer :)

Since ytou don't have access to a real long range you could get by with something like a Nightforce NXS 5.5-22x for the time being. A better scope for the 338 Lapua would be the NXS 8-32x. Sightrons have gotten good press (though I've never used one, Mysticplayer has and he knows target shooting) and you can't go wrong with a Mark 4 Leupold (I have a 3.5-10x on my Swiss Arms but it would be good for what you want to do for the moment but not the ideal power to get beyond 1000).

Thanks for the comments so far, appreciated. Given i also want to hunt moose with the gun, would 8x be a bit much for tighter shooting and/or tougher in low light? Would u maybe recommend maybe a 6-24? Might be newbish questions, but thats why i'm here!

Thx again!

I have used the bushnell 4-30X50, 6500 scope. Works great for my .308,and has a low enough power to realistically hunt with. Has a mildot reticle thats easy to see in low light.
And as you original post says, its around the $1000 budget level you have.
I used mine to shoot over 1400 yards this fall.
Loved it! Hope this info helps in your descision.
