I was cleaning the brown gunk out of my new .17HMR barrel for my CZ 455 today using regular patches on whipper-snipper cord because I have no rods small enough... And the cord snapped leaving a long length inside plus a triple patch stuck about halfway thru the chamber!!! I can only think to use compressed air, which I am going to the shop right away to try. Anyone have an idea? I do not want to ruin my new rifle! Thanks guys -m

The compressed air should work but if not straighten out a clothes hanger, take the sharp edge off of the leading end wrap a patch around it and push out the direction from which it went in. Then get a proper cleaning rod.

I unstuck a blocked barrel by dropping copper bb's in from the muzzle until they filled the barrel, left 1 inch from the muzzle, then I used a wood dowel which I stuck in the muzzle end, and just lightly tapped, when the end of the dowel got close the muzzle I pulled i out and dropped in more bb's repeated until I got the stuck weed wacker piece out. If done gently it won't hurt the rifling as the round bb's will rotate on them selves and not score the metal, worked like a charm.

Dizzy, you tried this on weed whacker cord? I tried poking a hanger down there and it only seemed to bind up on the cord. Did the BBs bind up, or did it push everything out nicely? And I assume it was a .17 and you used .177 BBs? Were they a snug fit?
Thanks -m

Have you tried a properly sized cleaning rod? You're going to need to buy one anyway. You spent spent probably $500 on a rifle but a proper kit to clean it was to expensive?

Yep I messed up. I'll be using a bore snake for regular cleaning... once I can get all the factory brown sludge out. Looks like I need to get myself a proper rod for sure. But as I said the hanger rod (which was basically the same diameter) just wanted to bind on the whipper-cord.

I don't feel right putting that much force on a brass rod in my barrel. Keep in mind I just put 500psi nitrogen on it so I think it's gonna take one helluva push to clear it.

A few drops of muratic acid for swimming pools will get rid of the patch in a heart beat then the weed eater cord will push out .Should only take a few minutes.Test the patch in acid before use and see how fast it is.How come a triple patch??

That is hydrochloric acid right? Won't that eat metal?

I pulled through 5 triple patches before the cord snapped. It was nice and tight, but I probably could've just used 2. They're very small generic patches.

Update** I got it out!! Red hot clothes hanger poked into the patch a bunch of times from the chamber end (the way it went in) untill the melted cord and patch cooled on it. Then I pulled it straight out stuck to the clothes hanger! Easy as pie.
THANKS!

I would soak gun oil in the barrel over night before doing anything. Lube will help and then try to push it back with a good rod

Considering that the area the gas had to work on is a mere 0.0232 square inches (3.14 x 0.086^2), 500PSI results in just 11 pounds of pressure actually exerted on the blockage. Any brass rod you can buy should stand up to much worse than that.
