Hey CGN,
As I have said in a few other threads/posts I am the proud and happy owner of a nice M1A with a NM Barrel and sights.
Now I am working on the journey of scoping it out.
Up front I will say I do NOT want remove the rear irons to do so and would very much like to be able to still use them when there is no scope mounted, plan on getting and using a scope with solid QD mounts to achieve this.
---
First choice for me is the A.R.M.S. 18 (one piece) mount.
I like that I can get this for about $300 CDN all in and that it looks quite good on the rifle as well as being very low. As well as keeping the irons useful when no scope is mounted like I said above.
Possible issues I have researched are...
FIT...that not all Springfield M1 receivers are the same/to exact mil spec and sometimes it requires some fitting ie. filling of the mount and/or gun to have it sit flush and square to the bore. Doing this is something I do NOT want to do nor trust my skill and ability to do so.
I have also read getting 100% ejection/brass clearance with the one piece mount isn't always perfect, it seems easy enough to fix/adjust this by trimming coils off the ejector? I would have to read more into this to know for sure tho.
Lastly this is one I have not been able to confirm or deny but when the mount is locked into the place are you able to take out and remove the bolt? I know you do not need to remove it very often and you can wipe it off and re-lube it fairly easily when its still in the gun but knowing so would be nice.
The second choice I have looked into is the Sadlak Industries "Airborune" mount.
I have read almost universal praise for this one...the only "bad" being that it will cost me close to $500 CDN all in.
I have also read that there is still sometimes fit issues using one of these but it seems much much more rare and might be more so for Chinese made receivers?
The other "issue" is the height of this mount, it still allows use of the irons but getting a cheek piece of some sort is almost a must for this one.
---
Which one would/do you use and why?
Any tips, tricks or advice?
Many thanks!
