Hello. I bought a case of Ranger hollowpoints in 9mm and then I was out the other day and a former LEO had some 9mm left over from when he was in the force and he brought it out and gave it to me. They came in an identical box as the ranger but the were different looking. The few differences I saw were:
1. Brass casing, nickle on the new rangers.
2. red type of substance around the primer on the brass cased ones.
3. black bullet on the brass ones and copper on the nickle.

Other than that they seem to be very similar. I have heard rumors that these black ones are what they call "Black Talons" which you can no longer get because they have body armour peircing capabilities. Maybe you guys can chime in here and clear things up for me. Pics posted below.

OK, I have cleared some of this up. in more investigation I have determined that the mystory bullet is a Ranger SXT which is a less expensive version of the original black talon indended for law enforcement use only. see quote.

Ranger SXT: Ranger SXT is a less expensive version of the original Black Talon cartridge intended for the law enforcement market. It consists of a black Lubalox coated bullet seated in a brass case. The bullet has six serrations on its meplat, and six talons. Ranger SXT is packaged in boxes of 50 cartridges marked "Law Enforcement Ammunition."

I am just wondering if the ranger stuff I have (nickle cased) still have the same "talons" or not? Is the only difference the black "Lubalox" coating??

The SXT is supposed to be the same as the original 'Black Talon'. The reasons for the Talons discontinuance are many and stupid. The round was advertised in graphic terms, the movie business and TV made it sound like a death ray, and believe it or not certain African American community groups in the states said it was a black bullet for killing black people. Actually, they are a fairly effective hollowpoint bullet that expands very quickly and tend not to overpenetrate, they will not defeat body armour any more or less than any equivalent bullet. (PS they were pretty accurate too!)

And the red stuff around the primer is to seal it from the elements...this sort of lacquer primer sealer is found on military ammo as well.

Don't forget! It was at the same time that these rounds were marketed that the entire "teflon coating" fiasco occurred! It seems that ammunition at that time got extra teflon treatment to reduce wear & tear to barrels - and NOT to penetrate Kevlar. Sigh.

Black Talons ?

I suspect that due to a cheaper monitor i'm using I see not Black bullets but Blue ones and I think they are for hunting Smurfs !!
Carefull , watch out for PaPa. :agree:

I just did a search of " BLACK TALON AMMUNITION" and one site said they came with a nickeled case and Black bullet, which doesn't match the picture shown. These could be just a police issue Ranger load with a Blue coating for ease of identification or chambering.
