I am writing a gun license test tomorrow. I am a little bit nervous need help.
I don't quite get how to prove a shotgun.
Please help.

Make sure the barrels are always pointing downrange. If it's a SXS break it open and check the chambers and if it's a pump crank the slide open and check the loading passage then check the barrel for foreign objects. Pretty straight forward.

Are you taking the exam or course?
Usually, they give a familiarization time with course.

Main important thing is your ACTS and PROVE, say it to yourself out loud when you do it, it'll help you remember.

After pointing and keep pointing at safe direction and finger off trigger.

Proving a shotgun.

Pump Action
1. Behind the trigger is the safety button, make sure the safety is on by pushing the button to the right.

2. Pull slide down to reveal chamber, make sure it is clear. If you can't pull the slide down, look in front of the trigger guard, there is a hinge there that you can depress which allow the slide to be pulled down. You can retrieve the shotshell by either continuously cycle it until nothing come out.

or

3. While keeping barrel pointed at safe direction, flip shotgun upside down, see the loading gate in front of the trigger area? Insert two fingers into it and depress the loading gate down. To the left side wall in the loading gate, is another hinge that you can depress, that is what hold the shotshell in the tube. If there are shotshell in the tube, it will come out if you depress the hinge on the left side wall. It will come out one at a time, so keep on depressing the hinge on the left side wall until no shell come out, or nothing come out. That is how you check the tubular magazine for shotshell.

5. With slide down, loading chamber open and empty, and confirmed there is no shell in the loading gate, make sure the barrel is clear of obstruction.

Hinge shotgun,
While keeping finger off trigger and barrel pointed at safe direction, just break open the shotgun by pushing the hinge to the side (usually counter clockwise) and bend the barrel down. Look through the barrel, make sure it is clear.

You forgot #4, he's doomed :p

Lol, ACTS and PROVE

The one question wrong on my non-restricted test was what a letter in one acronym stood for. I thought common sense would suffice, and it did, with the exception of that single question:rolleyes:

Never did remember either acronym, I prefer 'don't be a dumbass' with gun safety...

I am pretty sure you can ask the examiner something like this ->

" I not familiar with this model of pump shotgun please show me the safety features of this model "

I did this when I did the practical for my RPAL ... I had no idea about the revolver he selected for me to do ACTS PROVE on.

You can't be expected to be able to know everything on every firearm, you are ecpected to handle them all safely though.

Good Luck with your test, you will do great !

I found on my practical exams that they didn't expect us to know the safety features of each gun, simply because as you say there are way too many different guns to know them all. We were taught the basic terminology and common safety features of most guns in the course though. For me they just focused on the basics in the PROVE acronym in the actual exam. As stated above however I prefer the "don't be a dumbass" methods myself.

Thank I pass now I have one more problem.
My mum refused to sign my application for my minor license.
Quote I am currently 17.
The major problem is I am currently living in Vancouver, but when I am 18 I am probably going to move to Ontario for university. I cannot find any reference for my Pal then because no one in Canada has known me for 5 years except my relatives.
But my relatives is all out against guns

Very unlikely you will be able to get your license at this time then IMO, sorry :( If the only references you have are people who think you shouldn't have a gun, then you are probably going to be out of luck.

adopt a better family:p
just how long have you been here cause most anyone that knows ya could be a reference it does not have to be family

hmm, deffidently not talking ya out of it, try to educate your mom and bring her around.

but if you family doesnt like guns, i assume they dont own any to lend you.

you can use a gun when your under direct supervision of a PAL holder, so your covered if plinking with friends.

so other than hunting alone, you can still enjoy the sport.

No I mean when I am 18, I will probably move to Ontario for university. I don't know anyone in Ontario that's the problem. No friend in Ontario=no reference.
Is reference outside of Canada acceptable?
