I have a Remington model 700 in 308 and when I close the bolt on a round it takes some force to turn the bolt knob down onto the round

on closer inspection of the chambered round I can see a small piece of brass is being shaved off or the case itself is worn at the edge

once the bolt handle is down I can lift it and close it without an issue and it extracts and ejects the round perfectly

the bolt opens and closes easily when the gun is unloaded

any insight into this is much appreciated

Thanks

Phil

The extractors are tricky. Some are bent a bit out of shape when they were installed in the first place, others get sand or brass shaving packed behind them or finally give up on a diet of hot hand loads. It would help if they weren't riveted in place. Some gun smiths are adept at twisting and massaging them instead of replacing. I view it as an Achilles heel of the design, it works great when it works but it can also stop your rifle dead in its tracks. Just about anything else allows you to pry it back to clean, pop it out with a screwdriver, drive out a pin or even push it off the bolt with your thumbs and get it running again, but the Remington usually ends up at a gunsmith with spare parts and the knack.
