My ammo are getting oxidized and tarnished. Can I wash the ammo in soapy water? Is there a solution to remove the tarnish and oxidation. Can I spray them with W40? What can I do to preserve them?

i wouldn't worry about it. unless it is corrossion and verdegris (green "rust").

definately don't use WD40 on it.

best option, send it to me for disposal.

Would a spin in the tumbler do the trick?

"They" say that you should never tumble clean ammunition in a vibrating cleaner. Many have done it without any negative impact, but the warning is out there, myth or not.

It will clean up the outside, but can possibly bugger up the powder load and affect the way it shoots. The theory is that tumbling loaded ammo can break down the powder kernels inside the case and/or alter the burn-rate retarding coatings on the outside of the kernels. This can alter the powder’s burning properties, with dangerous consequences. If you vibrate loaded rounds for a long time (probably several hours), you could grind the kernels and alter their external coatings. Read the warnings on a can of powder, it says do not shake (for that reason).

It would help if you could post a picture. If it's just cosmetic and it is bugging you, try cleaning them up individually with 0000 Steel wool.
