Howdy.

I've come into a Winchester Model 1886 with a four digit serial number and chambered in 45-90 wcf.

According to the online serial number look-up, it was manufactured in 1887.

I am looking for any and all information on this type of rifle and what resources might be out there for restoration, etc.

Thanks in advance.

Regards.

In 1887, most cartridges fired black powder.
The action is quite strong, but the barrel may not be up to the high powered loads that are favoured today. Barrel steels improved in the 1890's, but many Winchesters didn't get 'smokeless steel' until much later.
Don't push the limits and you will be fine.
Should you wish to donate the rifle to a nice guy, I'm available. :D
Some guys have all the luck.

Winchester 86

Unless the Winchester 86 you have is a total wreck don't even consider
"restoring" it. You possibly have a valuable collector Winchester and any
alterations made will only serve to reduce the value. First let a person
qualified to appraise it to have a look and go from there.

I second that motion. It is rare to come across such a nice find. Unless the woods are "rotten" and the action and barrel so "rust encrusted" i would never go the restoration route. the gun has "history" and many of us out here in the "gathering " arena would even like to see and handle such a prize. Restoration does not improve on its value, unless you want it as an heirloom and wall hanger. I prefer to look at a gun that is unaltered rather than a "new" old gun. My meager collection have all seen the range. Not all the colour is remaining nor the wood finish perfect, but in my eyes a prize to be proud to have.
