Help winning a bet...

shoot the can before you got to the range, if you fluke out and hit it a second time while standing at 500 yards you can hit him up for 2 bottles rather then just the 1............

If you listen to all these naysayers you've already lost. Zero prone at the spot with good match ammo_Once zeroed sort out your sticks or rest or whatever before the day.Practice standing using said sticks!Use someone to spot for you to tell you where your rds are going.Practice more!

PS use one of those huge ass arizona iced tea cans from wallymart. ;)
Good luck and dont let anyone tell you you cant do it.

Not sure if anyone has mentioned it yet: If its a standing shot only, use a gun strap and wrap it around your elbow so its tight. This sure helps steady your aim, especially if the gun is barrel heavy!

I often shoot standing on the side of my 4x4 pickup, the rifle resting on sandbags placed on the TuffBox, really steady. Maybe it'll be legal for your standing position. I've shot a 2 liters of pop at 400y with my 5R that way, but a can at 500y with a sporter? I wouldn't have taken the bet.

But of course a bottle of rum to give your friend is another matter, you know you'll end up drinking it with him anyway! ;)

Keep in mind, if you bend the rules your buddy will likely bend the rules.

My buddy throws out that I can't hit a popcan at 500 yards in 3 shots with my Ruger scout in .308

Well... you didn't hit the pop can with a Ruger scout in 308, the bullet hit the pop can...

Ok guys... My buddy throws out that I can't hit a popcan at 500 yards in 3 shots with my Ruger scout in .308....

I told him to bring it on - bet is for a 40 oz bottle of Captain's Spiced.

The rules are this :

1. Has to be Standing (but he never said no bipod or tripod so I am going to use one - lol)
2. 3 shots only
3. 500 yards
4. with my Ruger scout rifle - it has a Leupold VX-R 4-12 x40 on it... should I get/borrow something longer range or will the Leupold be enough.

LOL, I want to win this bet and I will bend the rules (or non mentioned rules) where I can because for me - thats a LONG shot...

Advice, tips, Only shoot out to 300 ever.

Loop hole. Set the can at the 500 yrd mark then step back and shoot the can. But if your gets upset with that, then give a go. You may never know until you try right. Best of luck, let us know how you made out.

I wonder how much rum influenced this bet to begin with... My brother and I have had similar bets in the past, but just for bragging rights. Only one I can think of was a milk jug at about 800 yards with an old 303 with the open sights. Took 6 shots each, I fired one, he fired one, and so on, but I got it...

If you zero at 500, shoot a few practice shots and don't over think it you have a better chance than you think.

Oh, and the cheating thing is a good option for a laugh.

I look forward to the outcome.

Put the pop can on top of the bottle of rum ask him if he still wants you to take the shot if he says no he has officially backed out of the bet, go collect your bottle of rum. If he says you don't worry, no offense but I doubt you get remotely close to can or bottle.

OK, assuming you actually want to try this bet ( I advise against it actually ) you need to do the following:

1. Zero your rifle for 500m - get to a range/open land and confirm distance then zero
2. Pop can needs to be bright color - blaze orange sounds good
3. Get best ( ie most sturdy ) tripod you can and practice shooting off it with match ammo or best handloads
4. Pray for calm day
5. Repeat #4 above

Personally I think you have a hard task ahead of you. It can be done with ease assuming a good shooter from the prone with a half-minute rifle and good glass ammo etc but standing and with the equipment you have listed it will be tough. Good luck.
