Help with 45 70 effectivness at different speeds

Hi all,
My question is how effective is the 45 70 round on deer/elk/moose size game?
The reason i ask is (I have no hunting experiance)I have a Chiappa 1886 replica rifle
and chiappa says only load to saami spec. - in my speer book it says 400 gr moving 1800 fps
However the lever action (meaning Marlin) section says 400 gr moving 1870 fps, and ruger no.1- 400/2018.

So I'm thinking this is not enough to make any differance if I am restricted to
1800fps. I know its all over the interweb how effective 45 70 is at proper range, but I would be interested
to know the effectivness of real world combinations.

shot a deer 2 seasons back with mine using 405 grain lead cast at about 1400 fps. through and through plus through a 14 plus inch pine. deer went 30 yards and ran outta blood. very little meat wasted.
 
I took a Bison last fall with a 400 gr fnsp bullet travelling at 1860 fps at 268 yds with little or no meat loss. It dropped where it was standing. They do move slower with a more pronounce bullet drop than faster lighter bullets. You have to practice and know what your bullet drop is every 50 yds. I have taken everything other than Griz and sheep with a 45-70/45-90 with no issues. It is a lethal killer and due to its slower velocity has minimal damage to meat.
 
400 @ 1800, which the OP mentioned, will kill your deer/moose/elk no problem. Or you could kill 2-3 if they are all standing close to each other. Seriously though, factory 45-70 (stuff that I chronied anyay) is 300gr @ 1600 - 1800 through a guide gun, and that stuff is just fine for deer/elk/moose out to 200 yards or more. You add 100 grains of lead at the same speed and you're adding a lot of killing power.
 
Out of my Steyr Big Bore 450 Marlin, i reload a 400 gr swift a frame and push it at 2100 fps, killed a 300+ pounds black bear this spring and it drop like a rock, was dead before it hit the ground, those bigs bullets are just awsome... JP.
 
This is the third time I have looked at this thread, and I am concerned with the load the OP is suggesting is "SAMMI Spec". I don't know, but I thought the SAMMI load for the 405 45/70 should be less than 1400 fps, somewhere close to the original black powder load.

Marlin actions are much stronger than other lever actions and the data for them is not interchangeable with other levers, except maybe for the Winchester 94 XTRs.

I would check that Chiappa manual again.
