Hello all, I hope that this is the correct forum.
I would like to get a milsurp 7.62 NATO rifle of some type. Preference is for a semi auto but not for a Springfield M14 type.
Can anyone offer advice as to what is/was available that can be acquired in Canada as a non-restricted or restricted?
Thank you,

The choices for a 7.62 NATO semi rifle that is not an M14 are pretty slim.

A Garand with a 7.62 replacement barrel, and .....

What's wrong with the M-14?

I mean, apart from the fact that most of them are converted automatics (gasp! shock! fear! terror!)....... the early ones from Springfield and Winchester BOTH were strict semi-autos rifles and thew receivers were never cut for the fitting of the automatic parts. These are completely legal, and they can really make excellent shooters.

Or, staying legal, you can get a made-in-China-possibly-by-slave-labour clone of the M-14, and some of them also shoot very nicely. The woodwork on some of them is a little rough ;-) but if the metal parts meet spec and are properly hardened, it is surprising how well some can shoot.

I miss the FAL myself, having learned it in the military myself, was disgusted to see it classed as a "terrorist weapon"...... but that's what ya get in a free country run by jackasses.

There really isn't much in the way of legal semi-autos unless you spend toons of money and convert an AG42 or something.

completely legal if you have the proper 12(x) classification but of course you can't shoot them anymore, legally....

I had a Winchester M14 and I can assure you it had the automatic lug on the receiver. It's a CA class rifle, as it was built to fire full auto with the substitution of a few parts.

Of the 4 manufaturers of real deal M14 rifles, Springfield was the only one to make a semi auto version, and they only made 3 of them shortly before they shut down. Every other M14 made by H&R, SA, TRW, or Winny was manufactured as select fire. Check out differents website for lots of info http://www.imageseek.com/m1a/
