Excuse the ignorance, as my search turned up empty, but can someone help me with removal of an 870 forend as I may replace or restain? I've disassembled to remove the forend, but cannot separate wood from rails and don'r want to break either.

thanks in advance

brian what I did was bend a 3" nail into a "L" shpae makeing sure it was the same width as the insde of the forend and then used a pair of needlenose vise grips ... take it easy and it will come right off. make sure not to drag the nail end on the inside of the forearm..... take a grinder and round it off / dull it.

FYI if you look in the end you will see a "lock ring" which has two grooves cut into it (on opposite sides) you need a special tool (Buy one, make one, or use something temporarily)

I used a 1" think piece me metal, and cut grooves to fit, then turned it with that.. you can also use a nail as Westicle suggested.

you know the stupid thing, after I did the nail trick, I opened up the box that had my new surefire forend and out drops a supplied tool for foreend removal.

the things you do the night before your package arrives in the mail eh.....

Hey Brian, i have the special tool, you should have asked to me, i have it send to you with the pistol grip, anyway, if you need it, i can send it to you and send it back to me, i have the special wrench that do all model and caliber (20 or 12 gauge)

Sorry just posted this in another thread...

I made a fore stock tool from a piece of 1" nylon dowel with a 3/16" metal rod that was 1 1/4" long pushed across the dowel. Made from scrap lying around. It fits the grooves perfectly. Maybe that helps.
