Just picked up my first AR-15. 11.5" barrel. All it needs is a buffer tube assembly. I've got a Fibrelight CAR-15 stock (not the newer M4 type) on the way, but it's just the bare stock, nothing else.

I'm starting to get the basics down but have a couple questions. First off, obviously I need the buffer tube assembly. I know there are "commercial" and "milspec" buffer tubes. Is this based on the threads on the receiver, or on the stock? Once I get that figured out, where is the best place to find the complete buffer tube assembly (minus the stock!) at a reasonable price? Is this something that can be ordered from the US, assuming the dealer has their export stuff together? (like Brownells, Numrich, etc.)

I've also seen AR-15 stock wrenches, but are these actually necessary to assemble it, or is it just convenient?

Difference between milspec and commercial buffer tubes is the diameter. Stock you use must match the type of buffer tube you are using. Easiest way to tell the difference in the tubes is that the milspec tubes have a square end and the commercial ones are slanted. The threads on the end are the same and both will screw into your receiver.

I believe Q-Star carries both kinds.

imho you need a castle nut wrench or something close to one that you can rig up...if the stock is not torqued down tight enough the buffer tube will work itself loose after a few rounds...

whether you need commercial or milspec will depend on the stock you have available...if you don't have anything yet and plan to buy it together, then it doesn't really matter...just make sure the stock and tube are compatible.

ar-15 parts are available at brownells and questar to name a couple off the top of my head.
