Hi,

I was wondering if somebody knows how to check how far the lans are in a 270 Wby mag without all the fancy gizmos? I tried to with a 7mm Win mag case that I drilled out the flash hole, turned a bullet on the laith till the bullet moved with a slight bit of tension, and the bullet stays in the lans when I extract the case:(
Any help would be great.

Unless this is a custom rifle chambered without the weatherby freebore, you are most likely going to find that if you seat the bullet to be just off the lands,it won't fit in the magazine. That or there won't be enough bullet in the case neck to hold it in place.
I normally measure the distance to the lands by taking a fired case and putting a flat spot at the edge of the neck so a bullet can barely be started with your fingers. Then barely start a bullet in the case, place the assembly in the chamber and gently close the bolt. Then gently remove the assembly and measure the overall length.Repeat this a few times until you get consistant results.By the way, this measurement will vary from bullet to bullet so you need to repeat this procedure for any bullet that you intend to load for the gun. However with the long freebore in the weatherby chamberings, there may not be enough bullet left in the case to hold the bullet when it reaches the lands,so this method may not work.
Generally people just load the weatherby rounds so they fit the magazine and live with the fact that they can't seat the bullet closer to the lands due to the freebore..

Thanks for the info:D i guess I was getting too fancy:runaway: I`ll try that method and see how it goes. I`m loading 130gr Barnes Triple Shock so I want all the angles looked at :D

Thanks again,

Garnet, I`m currently trying to work up a load using 140 gr. TSX`s and am finding I`m having to come a good .10 - .12 off the lands to clear the mag box. Is turning into not an easy load to come up with, hope my latest batch and trip to the range does the trick. I`m currently sitting at 3.32 OAL and just barely clearing the mag.

Thanks for that info:) My oal was 3.25 and I still have 1/8" of mag box left to play with:eek: I was loading 59.0gr IMR 4350 just because I have an 8lb to play with. Have you tried 4350 in any of your loads? I also have IMR 7828, as well as RL19 and RL22 to try as well as Win748? I`m using match mag primers to touch them off. I read somewhere, maybe even at the Barnes site that they should be .30-.50 off the lans? That sound correct?
The gun is a Nikko Golden Eagle 7000:D

Thanks again for your info,
Garnet

Barnes recommends a starting point of .050" off the lands. One of my rifles shoots best at .050" but the other is .080" due to magazine restrictions. Both shoot equally accurate.
