Hello,

I have a P17 rebarreled to 300winmag. The conversion is incomplete, the magazine needs work. The metal magazine box I have has had the wide end cut off(to accommodate the longer shell). I tried to install the box but the mag follower is to small and the rounds won't stay in the magazine, they just pop back up. Maybe the metal box is not wide enough? What can I do? Do I need a bigger mag follower? Do I need a metal box or could the wooden side walls okay to use? With the magazine not working I thought that I could make it a single shot rifle, but the extractor wouldn't clamp over the rim unless I forced the bolt closed on a cartridge then it would extract and eject the round. I thought that it was an extractor problem so I phoned a big city arms company and they said to ship to them and they would fix the extractor. Two weeks later I call them and they tell me that there is nothing they can do, "mauser extractors and bolts were not ment to be used as single shot" that to load a round the bolt must have the magazine pressure to pick up a round and load it. Any help would be appreciated. So....what next?

Thanks
SW

I'm not sure who you're dealing with, but adjusting the extractor to allow it to slip over the rim of a chambered cartridge is something that has been done about a bazillion times, basically the extractor edge is ground to an angle to allow it to slip over the rim of the cartridge. I'm also not getting your magazine box referance. Are you saying they cut the back of the box off and then just left it that way? A new piece is supposed to be fabricated and welded on the rear of the box, then adjustments can be made to the follower and mag spring to accomodate the new cartridge. Or you can just buy a new magnum box and follower from Numrich and/or Brownells in the states. There's a little more to it then the above, it can be a little finicky, but really, this isn't rocket science. - dan

Rocket Science.. Dan... please don't forget who you are dealling with

So, I contact Numrich Arms and buy what style of internal box magazine with spring and follower? civilian 98? or would I buy using the box dimentions as a referance? Sorry guys, think of this as having to explain this to say (I had better not say woman) someone with limited knowledge of gunsmithing.

Dan,

I checked out the Numrich site, but only found parts for the P14, as you can see, if you follow the link, because these parts I am looking at are for custom rifles these cutom parts can fit a P17, right?: http://www.e-gunparts.com/productschem.asp?chrMasterModel=1370z1914 303 CALIBER

Which internal box magazine would I use

Magazine Box, H&H & Weatherby Magnum Series - Made For These Longest Type Cartr

or

Magazine Box, Long Action - For 30-06/270 Size Cartridges, Winchester Magnums &

What style of follower:

Follower, Winchester*

or

Follower, Eddystone

Could I use the spring I have?

Thanks

Post some pic's of the components you're having problems with. The conversion of a 1917 Enfield to 300Win Mag is straight forward. Sounds like you got a buggerred up project from the getgo. We may be able to help you salvage this....Clearly state calibre you desire, magazine capacity, what is your current barrel chambered for and any manufacturers markings on the rifle like "London Arms", "Century", "BSA", etc.

yes, some parts are interchangeable between P17's and M17's. You want the magazine box and follower for the Win Magnums, your spring should be ok, they don't fail that often. If you hunt around thier site (Numrich's), there should be a follower for magnum cartridges, which is the one you want. If not there, Brownells used to sell them too. Maybe someone on this site has these parts kicking around, this used to be a pretty common conversion. If you need more info, just PM me and I'll find the item in the catalogue - dan

Thanks Dan,

As soon as I get it back I will figure out what to do with this rifle. The big city arms company called me yesterday and told me that they "had converted the bolt to fire single shot" and it only cost me $100, not bad going from not designed to shot single shot to conversion for $100. Well it has arrived home and it cycles rounds flawlessly. They also did, I am sure, an unintentional modification to my rifle, they broke the trigger sear off. F%#@

I have a .300 Win Mag Century conversion of an Enfield Pattern 1914. For what its worth, it is a swine to load a full magazine without something hanging up. The first round doesn't catch well, but the second pushes it into place. The wise old timer I bought it from said he and a wise young gunsmith worked on it to improve the feeding. They got fed up and left it somewhat better but not perfect. I think they were polishing or reshaping the underside of the receiver where the mag pushes the cartridge.

It is a great gun with minute groups out to 200. I wanted a flat shooter for the Prairies when my Eastern deer gun, a Remington gas auto in 30-06 kept stringing vertically on me.

The black plastic stock has an ugly beavering scar around the bolt handle, and a manufacturer's marking '98' in the barrel channel. I can only presume the stock was switched. I buttered the gaps and openings with brown Acraglas to reduce the slop and close some of the most objectionable holes. Neither matters because light rifle + heavy recoil + plastic stock = easy to carry and pleasant on the shoulder in the field. And I use that rifle for all big game in all weather.
