I am wondering if anybody has any suggestions regarding a problem I have with my .45 amt hardballer. I recently cleaned the firearm went to the range. When I went to pull the slide back to chamber a load I heard a clunk. The bullet has fallen out the gun. Can anyone explain how to fix it besides getting rid of the hardballer?

Thanks

You are gonna have to clarify that a bit... Are you saying when you released the slide, a loaded round exited the ejection port... Did you release the slide with the slide release or just pull it back to release it... Without more info I am suspecting the problem in with your magazine....

Edit... I missed that you said you pulled the slide back to release it.

Did this happen more than once? Did you try a different magazine?

Yes, I tried a different magazine and the same thing happened. I have had a history of problems with this gun. Mostly stovepipes. I have had the ramp polished and it doesn't seem to help. I can't seem to get more than 7 rounds out before I have a problem. I am using factory winchester ammo.

What are you using for magazines? Are they AMT factory units? Years a ago I bought some cheapo no name magazine for my Colt 1911 and they were absolute garbage. I have since switch to Shooting Star magazines and have never looked back....

The majority of feeding problems with the 1911 platform can usually be traced back to the magazine.

The AMT is a stainless gun too, they require a very good quality lube on the slide rails to prevent "galling", which would cause your gun to cycle sluglishly leading to the stovepipes you've mentioned... Other factors that can cause stovepiping are "limp wristing" and a recoil spring that is too strong.

I am using wilson mags. I bought the gun used about 15 years ago that is the magazines they came with. What lube would you recommend?

I have had good luck with Brakefree CLP. It is advertised as a Cleaner, Lubricant and Protectant... However I do not use it as a cleaner, there are cheaper better alternative for that.

Wilson mags are good quality, but I am wondering if the feed lips have spread overtime, this would explain the loaded rounds jumping out of the ejection port though, it really sounds like the cartridges are getting free of the magazine before they are reaching the chamber...

Back to your slide/frame fit... If you disassemble the pistol and just place the slide back on the frame and move it back and forth it should run smoothly with no gritty feeling. If it feels rough and gritty I am guessing you have a "galling" issue. Good picture of the frame rails would quickly indicate the issue too.

If galling is present it is due for a trip to a gunsmith, or if you are semi handy you could probably deal with it yourself. A light sanding with 600 grit wet or dry and some solvent for lubricant on the frame rails and the corresponding mating surfaces inside the slide should get it running smoothly again.

It could be extractor tension. Field strip the gun, take the slide, and slip a round of ammunition up under the extractor It should be able to hold the round against the breech face at any angle without falling out.

That said, AMT 1911s don't have a very good reputation. I suggest selling it to somone who thinks they are "cool" because they saw it in the Hitman games and getting another gun.
