I am a long time shooter but not that knowledgable on AR types of rifles. The boss has approved a budget of up to $3500 on this toy. Any suggestions? I would prefer something out of the box as I don't have the time to build one. Thanks.

Is that your total budget, including accessories like optics? Or just for the rifle?

You can do very well for that money.

Then spend 3200 with tax on a KAC, it comes with iron sights. Then in a few months, you will need optics to maximize your gun :D

I'll throw out a few definitions, understand that I am also a noob and might require slight correction.

PDW = 7.5" barrel. Noisy as hell to the shooter. Very high pressure in the gas system.

CQB = 10.5" barrel, or close. I think usually has carbine length gas system, still high pressure but more common. In fact, I see more parts for carbine length gas systems (buffers & springs, receiver extensions, stocks) for carbine length than any other, by a wide margin.

Carbine = 14.5-16" barrel, carbine gas system is usually 7.5-8" down the barrel

Rifle can have either midlength or rifle length gas systems (I don't know the exact lengths), which are lower pressure so take softer buffers and springs. Typically, what, anywhere from 18" - 24" barrels are common.

You can mix and match uppers and lowers most of the time, though some manufacturers build to their own spec and may take minor machining to match with other brands. There are gazillions of upper, lower, and parts manufacturers...the guns are mostly plug and play with different parts.

Whatever you do, don't ask who makes 'the best' of anything...you'll never get a straight answer ;)

$3500 will get you the top end of anything available in Canada, so just pick your wishlist parts or look and go from there.

Does it NEED to be an AR? You can get a Tavor or an XCR for that price, and those two are non-restricted.

What ranges you planning on using it on as well? Will make a huge difference in the type of glass you get. Don't want a 1x red dot if you plan on going out to 300m with it, and you don't want a 4x if you aren't going past 100m either.

You can even get an AR + another upper for this price.
eg: Complete LMT 16' midlength and 12' Piston Upper

For that price you can enjoy both DI and piston operated ARs

For $3500, forget the AR15 and get something better that is also non-restricted and unregistered. That's my $.02 worth.

Maybe look at a Swiss Arms, Robarm XCR-M, Bushmaster ACR, H&K SL8-5 or similar.

If you MUST go AR15, look at a Noveske like the Afghan, or a KAC SR-15 or an LMT MRP - there's lots of high-end ways to spend $3500.

Or alternately, but a nice LMT, Stag, Daniel Defense, etc. AR15 for around $1600 with a few goodies and spend the balance on optics and ammo.
