Help with gun purchase

The 5r rifling isn't that new (from the 1990s if memory serves) and was developed by Obermeyer. The design has five lands and rather than have 90degree corners, they have are bevelled what looks closer to 70degrees. The theory is (and seems to be proven) is the rifling lasts longer, is less prone to fouling and is easier to clean. Maybe the easiest way to explain it is it's a compromise between Lothar Walther's polygonal rifling and conventional profile.

I have a 30-06 target rifle with a >28" 5r barrel and it's very accurate. On that note, nothing on this continent is fair game for the standard length 30-06 category. As to your Savage: it may look like it's been dragged through a rock pile, but if the inside is good all it might need is re-bluing and new stock. For adverse hunting conditions you are right about a stainless and composite rifle: One moose hunt in Newfoundland with my excellent condition m70 and even the mint bluing struggled with the constant exposure to water despite my cleaning/oiling it every night... the laminate stock doesn't seem worse off as a result. If I do that frequently, I'll be looking for a rife as you... 280rem, 30-06, 270win or maybe 7mm RemM. Though something like a stainless model 7 in wildcat stock and (can't believe I'm saying this) but a 7mm or .30 short magnum.

Just because I'm browsing the EE right now, here's a used Sako 85 in stainless and 338wm. This would be a great firearm that would last a lifetime. You'd also have a hard time upgrading from it IMHO.

This Sako would be a great rifle!
Just be careful...as I have found out...they're like Pringles...you can't stop at just one! LOL
I'll be up to 6 when the new ones get here!
Was out shooting my LH 85 in 9.3x62 again today...what a great rifle! Ready for bear!
