Hi all,
To start, I do not *yet* have pics but I will later this evening and will return to insert them into this post and the one below (which I'll reserve).
Before that, however, I'd like to explain the rifle and it's condition and get some initial feedback from people.
I have a 1915 dated Mauser, from my readings I think it is a Gew98.
The condition is pretty rough, though all the controls seem to be functioning well enough; the serial numbers seem to match on all the parts except the bolt, which looks like it is stamped with only 2 digits, but different digits that the other numbered parts (there are tons of numbers on this thing)
There is some rust on the visible surfaces, the rifling down the barrel looks pretty good, the crown a little rough, the bore/throat area is hard to tell. There is a sling, but it's in bad shape, not sure how to tell if it is original. Same deal with the stock.
I'm not sure of value (which isn't my primary concern) or how best to care for it (which is). Should I clean it? Should I leave it as is? Can I shoot it? Should I?
I realize some of these questions may be hard to answer at this point, but I wanted to get a thread started and put the info I have out there; more to follow.
Thanks very much.
