hi all, i'm wanting to get myself an AR, nothing fancy just for plinking cause they're just too much fun to shoot, i've seen them on the EE for various prices & on a site sponsor for under $600, my questions are how hard would it be to build my own? & since i'm just looking for a fun rifle am i just better off buying a complete rifle? thanks in advance

If you have any real mechanical acumen then assembling your own AR isn't that difficult. But accumulating the parts and specialty tools you would require for the task is virtually impossible for less than the price of a new AR. A receiver set will be between $350-$400. The stock and receiver extention are around $100. $225+ for a barrel. $100 for a lower parts kit. And you're already over the price of a new Norinco without getting a bolt carrier group or a handguard, or the $100 armorers wrench or the receiver blocks you need to build the thing.
If you're only going to shoot it casually, and building ARs isn't likely to become a hobby the buying a completed rifle is the far better value.

Building an AR is nothing like building a M305. The problem is sourcing all the parts to your specs at the best price ( + tax and shipping). If you are a very patient man, you can build your perfect AR for a reasonable price ( but probably not cheaper than a stock Norinco) but who has the patience to wait that long??
