Greetings all,
I have a friend, just had new baby and wants to sell me his S&W 17-4.
I will get a picture tomorrow or tonight, that will maybe help.
It is a 6" barrel, blued with target sights and a vent rib.
Also has the #'s 337 then Model 17-4 after on the box.
Serial # AJT7###
Product code was 100503
Trying to establish a market value and age.
It is in excellent cond. No marks.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Vent rib? They are usually serrated

How much did he pay for it? How much does he want?
First owner? How does it shoot?

$500-$600 is probably fair for a deal between friends for a nice mod 17 from the mid 70's....

So all the ones on the EE at 700-800+ are out to lunch?

I'm interested because a nice .22 S&W revolver is fairly high up on my "to get" list. It doesn't have to be mint,....just a good shooter in nice shape and I'm curious as to what is a fair market price.

I agree, maybe more towards $600.

It is a pinned barrel K frame and will last forever. It will have the best DA and SA trigger pull of ANY production revolver and it will appreciate in value with time ie. it is an investment.

For mint, $700-800 is in the ballpark for an older 17. The current new ones are a lot more.
I picked up a 17-2 K22 for $600 in excellent condition except for a few chemical spots which removed the bluing.
Still my most accurate revolver with the best trigger yet.

Not if you want it that much, and the seller does, too. I got a good one for $500 a few years ago and am not sorry. If you are patient and diligent you will probably find one in the range can-down suggests. Eventually.

bargainbuyers, if your friend is content for $600 be glad, and throw in the promise of first refusal if you ever decide to sell it.

$600 should get you a pretty nice one. For $700-$800 you better be getting LNIB with original paper work and box etc.

In the $700+ price range I would be look at a new one.

Excellent answers all.
Thank u Gentlemen
I love this site, I can always count on some good replies.
"Can-down" I hear what you are saying about him naming a price.
I tried that and he is thinking he has some hugely valuable piece.
He is thinking 4 figures. I knew that was crazy so I offered $200 LOL!
I called H:S: on him.
So, to settle the matter I decided to ask the experts.
Cheers
