So I recently bought myself a Russian SKS and I am looking to make some improvements and modifications to it. I am going to buy a stock and mounts and other stuff but what I was looking around and some people say to upgrade the gas tube. Could someone please tell me the benefits of upgrading from the factory gas tube. Also are there any other recommended upgrades.

Side Question: What is the importance of all the serial numbers on the gun matching. A bunch of us made a road trip to buy 6 of these from a dealer and he pointed out that all the serial numbers matched all over the gun.

The best upgrade you can make to an SKS is to buy lots of ammo, take your time shooting it, enjoy the process, and repeat often until you are very, very accurate. Everything else is just new junk you will add on, reduce performance efficacy, and eventually remove because the SKS is at its best when it is virtually bone stock.

The only exception to that is perhaps adding Tech Sights to the SKS. If you want to do that upgrade, then be my guest. Longer sight line, non-permanent modification, and still maintains zero following rifle disassembly. Can't go wrong with that.

It is otherwise rather difficult to improve on the SKS, with most options being cosmetic in nature, and that is a rather subjective measure of improvement.

Serial numbers matching means that it still has all the same parts it left the factory with, and hasn't had any parts replaced during the refurb process. Some people find that to be desirable, some don't.

Real upgrades that will improve your shooting

-Remove bayo and cleaning rod
-Bedded the "woodstock"
-polish the tigger group "with out change the contours"
-use the iron sights and not a cheap scope mount
-reload you own ammo

Remove bayonet and rod polish trigger group get a wolf spring kit. get a good scope mount that screws to the reciever like a choate and practice lots.
