Help with Springfield Armory 1911 A1

I just bought a Springfield Armory 1911 A1 in .45ACP and am having trouble reassembling the slide. The gun has a full length guide rod and although I was able to get the barrel bushing off after some trouble I cannot get it reassembled. It appears that the guide rod is just a hair too long and won't allow the bushing to move across and seat.

Has anyone else had this type of problem and what was the remedy?

With the slide removed, try putting the bushing in before the guide rod. Then put the guide rod in. Put slide back onto frame and insert slidestop. Then retract slide about a half inch and insert spring plug and turn bushing with a bushing wrench. That should do it. If I recall, most Springfields come with two piece guide rod that can be disassembled with an allen wrench to make it easier. Hope this helps!

The two-piece guide rod was the answer. Thanks.
 
Trigun is right Youtube is your friend. I had to watch it twice the first time I took apart my 1911, and several times when I tried to put together my Ruger Hunter 22!
 
OH and BTW,

You will find that things go back together easier if you have a few stiff drinks first! and wear safety glasses as that spring has a nasty recoil
