Thanks for any suggestions right off the bat.
I traded in a mistreated Ross MK III some years ago. It languished in the safe for too long, but I'm working on getting it going...slowly.
The barrel is bobbed to 24 1/4 " ( measured to the receiver ring ), of course it required a new sight hood too. Shiny bore though...cool
Hideous shotgun rubber buttpad installed on a sportered stock. And they put the magazine housing in a vice and nuetered it to 2 rounds ( changed it out...thanks mr. e.moose ).
The really bad stuff...some idiot dropped it and it landed of the right rearmost corner of the rear sight and bent the bridge down so it hampered bolt actuation. I managed to jack the bridge a tad so the bolt works fine now. But how much is enough and how much is too much...Realizing that a couple thou (proud or shy) will affect my POI at distance.
And it seems as though the rear sight is tipped at a glance.
If any members out there have a Ross they could measure and shoot me the measurement it would be greatly appreciated.

I should have my head examined for tackling this rather than just buying another...but I can be simple that way.
Would like to take it Elk hunting in the next few days. Why? To prove it can be done I suppose.
Planning on loading 180 BTSP in front of 38 gr of 4895 for fodder, as per Flying Pigs recommendation ( Tinman uses a powder that I do not have ).
But this sight issue may be my undoing, realizing this.

I will be limiting my shots if I can make it work, so the long range sight may be a redundantcy. But I'm going to drift out the pin on the rear sight to check it for true now.
Thanks all.
Edit; the rear sight is tipped due to the spring under it being not level. May have to peen or shim the channel it slides into...Bubba, Bubba, Bubba...

My Ross MK III measures 2.05 cm or 0.807 inches. Two decimal places is the limit of accuracy for my calipers. Yours could be a couple hundreds of an inch too large, you might have expanded it slightly too far.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised to find that they have 0.020" or more variance if a guy samples a group of them. 0.807 is a tough number to aim for ha ha. I'd say spec may be 0.800, or 0.825 even.

The hole in the rear sight frame can get loose or could have even drilled loose in the first place. Some I've had were tight, some not. I bet the spring bring out would do exactly what you are saying it is doing though. I bet once it's sighted for elk range it won't matter either way.

Edit - missed the last bit in OP's post... Is the spring warped, or is it hanging up on something causing it to not be level? unequal wear on the surface of the spring or base of the sight where they contact?

Seems to me the sight bridge is probably ok, now it's just the rear sight not being square to the bridge or receiver.

Well - Spring considerations aside, does the elevator assy wobble, or is the through pin bent? FWIW - The rifle is going to shoot horribly high at 100 y with any sight position, so you need to consider a plan for that. I've decided to put scope bases on my sported Rosses - not particularly hard to do, and more suitable for my 50 + year old eyes.

The pin isn't bent, but the sight does have a wobble when you apply pressure. Not a shake, but it will move. My son and I did some ' Fire correction at distance' the other day.
And it can be negated with a bit of 'Kentucky windage' Put the top right corner on the bottom left of a Reactive target ( Basketball sized white chalk rock ) at about 370 yds...Bob's your Uncle...Elk steaks.
Minute of Elk, lol

Ross sporter The measurement you show is 0.801 on my rifle. The bridge has been opened TOOO much. However if you are using it for 1&200 yards with the sight flipped down, it may not make a big difference. Mine came as a sporter with a 24" barrel, I scoped it, they are accurate rifles.
enjoy

Oh, as soon as I got the .807 measurement...out and put 'er in a vise and closed it to about .810.
Thanks all

Well, she don't just talk the talk.
Took an Elk at 344 yds ( lazered ) yesterday. Normally I'd consider that too far, but some *sshat blew a hoof off of one.
Burned a tag on it, sometimes you gotta do the right thing.
Held a touch left with the elevator at midway between 3 -400 yards.
Winchester .308 flat base over 38 grains of 4895 (the bore is good on it). Swept it right off it's (3 off them ) hooves. Front quarter, bullet didn't exit.
I think I may have a new truck gun, yessir. It's a good piece
