Hello I recently put a threaded muzzle brake on my savage 10t-sr and my point of aim is now 7 inches high at 100 yards with 6.5 Creedmoor. My velocity is 1830fps with muzzle brake and 2700fps without( yes I have the proper brake on). I inspected the muzzle brake and bullets don’t seem to be hitting the brake in any fashion. Do you think the threads could be off or untrue? It looks like the shoulder on the muzzle thread could be off a bit but I am certainly not a gunsmith. What else could be causing this? Only suggestions I’ve had from a gunsmith is to cut and recrown.

Thanks
Chris

It was a friends not sure on brands but definitely accurate multiple firearms were used with multiple loads and the only numbers that were out of whack were when I had the muzzle brake on my firearm. I tried on then off then on again 1800fps to 2710 fps to 1830fps respectively. Every other round in 6.5 creedmoor that was fired was in the 2700-2800 ballpark

That does not sound right. Do you get a significant drop in point of impact when using the muzzle brake to when not?
Is it possible the blast from the brake was effecting the chrony with your setup?

What chrony and how does it group? If the bullets are hitting the brake, you'll be shooting shotgun-like patterns, complete with sideways impacts etc.

I didn’t get a drop in point of impact it was 7 inches high at 100 yards but the velocity was only 1830fps warrenb. No it was not a clamp style chrono. I really don’t get what is going on ...looking for ideas and Input. I think it was a Caldwell Ballistics precision chronograph according to the pictures I saw on the web if that helps Robmcleaod82.

I wouldn't be at all concerned with where you are impacting at 100 yds with the brake. Brakes can change your point of impact. If you plan on hunting with the brake just re set your zero and go shoot. You say it shoots good so other than the velocity of 1800 fps I don't see a problem. I agree the chronograph is out of whack. How close to the muzzle was the chronograph? Are these hand loads or factory? Bullet weight? For example I shoot a 6.5X47 with 130 gr Berger's at 2985 fps. I won't drop below 1800 fps until 800 yds. As chrismc stated go shoot some drops at extended ranges to verify your muzzle velocity. You will need some type of shooting program to do this. I use SHOOTER which has a nice correction section for confirming muzzle velocity.

Beeman i really don't think the chrono i out of whack. I did try different distances and heights relative to chrono and results were the same. I went brake on then off and back on with same results (1800fps-2710fps and 1830fps respectively) I was shooting factory both American Eagle 140gr match and Hornady 140 ELD-M had same results 1800's with brake 2700's without. i did check the battery on chrono it was good. An RPR 6.5 with a brake shot multiple rounds through the same chrono all in the 2700-2800 range. On my next range trip i will try longer distance shots to see if i am getting false readings.

If the brake is under bored that might cause it...what brake, thread, and caliber is it for?
That would be a hard one to screw up (but not much surprises me anymore) as threading is usually 5/8-24 on a 6.5mm, and most 5/8-24 brakes are 30cal. Unless you get one that needs to be reamed to caliber... they come undersized, usually 20-22cal.
Maybe see if a 6.5 bullet will drop through the brake to make sure it was bored through all ports.

Hitzy it is a Insite Arms Heathen Brake. It is indeed for 6.5mm and the bullets drop in there with ease. It is 5/8-24 thread

Only other thing I can guess, is a couple years ago Savage did a run of rifles where the bore was considerably off center, this could cause bullet strikes on a brake.
There is something physically slowing the bullets down and it has to be the brake if everything is how you described it.

If I ever get a chance to shoot my rifle in the next century or two, (dang wind) after OCW testing I will remove my brake and see where it hits.
