Couple weeks back I picked up a Henry Classic Lever action .22lr (H001)
I cleaned the gun then stepped out to check the sights on gophers, I had one at about 20-30 yards and couldn't for the life of me hit the bugger. After 15 rounds of hi-low-left-right I figured well... either I still cant shoot with iron sights or this cheap lever gun is piece of yellow citrus fruit. I Mounted a 3-9X40 scope on there, and after sighting it in on a clump of dirt I went to visit the gopher again. Of the next 50 shots or so, I killed at least 20 gophers as well as a few chips of cow ####.
Scope looked too big and bulky on such a petite little gun, I started looking at peep sights.
I was shocked at the price of a receiver mounted peep sight, as well as the Hiviz aftermarket front sight assembly.
So before spending $$ on a peep sight I had to see if I could shoot with them.
A little DIY and I found I really like peeps.
The hole in the peep was drilled at 0.93", Williams Gun Sights says its a good middle ground for target shooting and hunting. (Image through rear sight was taken with camera right up against it, only way I was able to make camera focus on front sight. Peep hole is much smaller when actually aiming the rifle)
Front sight has is a piece of 0.04" Truglo fiber optic rod fastened to the top of it. Just taped for now, if I find I like it I'll super glue it on. The 0.04" looks tiny, but gives a very precise aiming point. I tried a 0.09" fiber optic rod and found it too thick. If I find the 0.04" too thin, I'll try 0.06".
Anyway, I plan on keeping the modified front sight, however I do have a Williams 5D-GR receiver mounted peep sight in the mail.
About the Henry, I have nearly 1000 round through it now, and haven't had a problem whatsoever. Fun little thing to shoot, I enjoy it much more than my semi autos.
