Anyone out there have much experience shooting the Henry Repeating Arms 30-30? I had more or less settled myself on either a Marlin 336 or a pre 64 Winchester, but then I was handling a Henry today at the local gun shop and was amazed at how smooth the action was, and how solid the gun felt in my hands. However, It's a bit heavier than the 336 and 94, and more expensive. It sure felt right though.

The wieght decided it for me, there are plenty of marlins and pre 64 winchesters to be found in fantastic shape for less too.

I realize the Henry is heavier and that there are many other 30-30's for less (see original post). I grew up with a Winchester 94 and never had any issues with the gun. That being said, just because something is cheaper doesn't mean it should be bought. All I know of the Henrys is what I read in a couple online reviews (both positive) and the 10 minutes I spent with the rifle this morning in the gunshop. The quality of the rifle (especially the action) when compared to a 336 was obvious. It was far more enjoyable to handle and if it shoots as good as it feels, then maybe the extra one pound of weight would be worth it.

The reason for this post is not to start a debate about Henry vs 94 vs 336. I would just like some hands on information from someone who owns (or has shot) a Henry.

I have a 94 and alot of experience with the 336 and I also hunted with a henry bigboy 44mag. I like all three guns and yes the henry is considerably heavier but when it fits, it doesen't seem to make a difference. I used to want the lightest gun I could get my hands on but as I get older I just want the gun that carries and soulders well. I guess it's personal but all three guns are alot of fun.
Good luck!

Had a Marlin, have a Winnie and also a Savage 99 308. Love them all but I prefer both the 336 and the Savage because they fit me and feel really solid. I get the impression the Winnie has too many moving parts. Yeah I know they have been successful and all but I feel the Marlin is a better design. Clean thru the chamber etc. And the Savage lets me get away from the 30-30 too. In all fairness its likely they are all pretty much equal in the long run and its just our preference that drives us. I have 2 guns over 100yrs old and one is the 1894. Absolute delight to shoot. Buy what you like and use what fits you. I like darker beer and some dont. We are still drinking at the same table. FWIW I also prefer the curved pistol grip but I have 3 levers with straight stocks too. Cuz they shoot so good. And they look cool.
