henry big boy

does anyone know anything about these rifles, quality, reliability etc

lookn into getting one in 44 or 357

Henry had perhaps the best reputation for customer service of any manufacturer.

I don't own a Big Boy but do have one of their Frontier 22s. Wonderful rifle. Great fit and finish. Incredibly accurate (5/8" group @ 50 yards from a bench and open sights).

The Big Boys do tend to be a bit on the heavy side compared to other levers and are a bit more expensive. Those tend to be the only drawbacks.

If my budget would allow I'd have a 44 Big Boy and a 30-30 Big Boy in my safe right now!

My cowboy shooting buddy has one in .357 and really likes it. I fired it a couple of times and it's smooth. I'm seriously thinking about about getting one or possibly a '66. Although the design of the Big Boy is not period correct it was just recently accepted by SASS. You load it from the front just like a .22. You pull the rod out of the magazine, insert the bullets, then put the rod back in and lock in place.

I would get a Marlin or one of the 1892 Winchester clones. The Henrys are kind of cheap and ugly looking to my eye and are heavy for their calibre. Right now, you can actually buy either one for less than the price of a Henry Big Boy.

I do not like loading them from the front. Asides from that, great gun. Smooth, reliable, accurate, and easy to maintain. I wouldn't call it a pretty gun, but I don't need pretty guns. I'm shooting it, not displaying it. I have one in both 357mag and 44mag. Have used the 44mag for deer hunting a few times. Prefer a 30-30, but the 44mag is more than adequate. 357 is great for just shooting at the range. One thing I am curious about, can I put both 357magnum and 38special at once? I've put both in, but I'm curious if I could shoot both at once? For example, load the mag 38, 38, 38, 38, 357, 38, 38, 38, 357, 38. I've a young cousin who flinches, and I'm thinking this might teach him a bit to get rid of that habit.

I don't see why not.......the one my friend has shoots both .38/.357 interchangeably. If you decide on a Marlin lever gun, you had better hurry as they are closing the plant down that makes cowboy lever guns. I have both the Marlin CB and Marlin C in .357 and they are good shooters. I also have a Rossi/Puma 92 in .357 that is flawless when firing .357 cases however it has a tendency to stove pipe .38 spl cases. Overall length sensitive.
