I just saw on Henry`s website a shortened H001L with a 12 inch barrel and a cut down stock. They are listing it as a `Mare`s Leg`. Any idea on restricted or non-restricted status from the experts here on the forum. I`m not really a fan of the short stock but a regular length butt stock on it would make it a really short bunny rifle for the thick stuff.

Unfortunately it's restricted as it's under 26" (25").
The barrel length doesn't make any difference on a .22 as long as it's over 26" it's non-res.

Henry is a pretty good company customer service wise... I wonder if they'd be willing to run a batch of these with full length stocks? I agree with the OP, it would make a great grouse and bunny gun. :)

They are 25 inches ( there's one in .45 colt as well) so an extra inch of stock or a regular butt would get it over 26 inches.

Nice to see Henry having some fun with their line up!

With CanAmmo importing chopped up Chinese guns for our market their Winchester .22 clone would be a good candidate for Trapper and Mare's leg surgery......

Mare`s Leg

I just emailed Mr. I at Henry Repeating Arms about the possibility of putting a full length buttstock on it to make it more feasible for our hunting and trapping market. The message took me about a minute to do on their `contact us` portion of their website. Maybe some more of us could contact them to show our interest...

Even an 1 1/4" fat rubber butt pad would suffice.

Mare`s Leg

Maybe Clay at Prophet River could set this up for us. (I`ve just sent Clay a PM and an email.) We`ve seen the magic he made with the work he did on the Ruger Number 1`s in .303 British Cal. Having two children and three nephews of shooting age, I`d be in for 5 of them.

Yep I'd buy one for sure if it had a full stock.
Issue is that if it had a full stock it would be a NFA SBR and the State depatment would never let it out of the country.
Also if it's considered a Handgun by the RCMP there is no changing it into a Non-res. "once a pistol always a pistol" policy.
Mind you this thing is clearly a rifle.

True, it seems that once it`s deemed a pistol, it then is still a pistol. That`s unfortunate. It would be nice if they let us import a batch of the factory 12 inch barrels and magazine tubes and had a competent smith up here put them together. They would be the length we want and still be ``rifles``.

Good idea, that might actually be doable. Kind of like sending a pistol without the barrel. Or a rifle action minus stock.

and the powers that be clearly don't care about common sense when it comes to gun laws.

neat little gun though, what capacity does it have?

Too bad Henry didn't use their octagon barrels on the .22 mare's leg... I guess they wanted to keep the price low.
