Just curious on the main differences between the Henry Mares Leg and the Henry lever action. Why does everyone want the mares leg and not just the plain lever action?

Gonna see if I can find both in stock locally and see how each feels. Maybe I'll end up with both.

I seriously have a problem.

My favorite toy

I have an octagon barrel lever action, and I love it so accurate and the gold tip on the end sight is the icing on the cake.

Shorter stock and barrel on the mare's leg. People want it because it's cool, one of the shortest non-restricted rifles.

People want the ML because it is short - that's why I got one in 22 - after the coolness wore off (pretty quick) I ended up getting a youth stock for the ML which is IMO a better set up - my 8 year old daughter can shoulder it just fine and the short barrel allows for a great center of gravity for a little one - but with one screw I can swap out the stocks and shoot paper zombies from the hip all day....(albeit in a safe and controled manner)

I did the same, the short Mares Leg stock is pretty useless, but still fun to play with in the right conditions.

However with a full stock on it is makes a really handy carbine.

The short sight radius (and less than stellar factory sights) can limit the accuracy of it. (The short barrel is just as accurate and you don't loose velocity) To this end I installed a tang peep sight so while having a handy 12-7/8" barrel I have a sight radius equal to that of most +20" barreled guns.

I am a big fan of Henry rifles, they are just as affordable as they are enjoyable

Picked up the regular lever action today. Fun little gun. Shoots great and is a blast. I checked out the mares leg but it's so short it's useless except for hip firing. Un
Ess your arms are only 16" long.

Because the Mare's Leg is a holster-able gun that doesn't require an ATT or shooting range to enjoy. Not to mention Steve McQueen role playing fantasies.

Oops, didn't realize how old this thread was. TS, enjoy your purchase.

The Henry website says the Mare's Leg is only 25" OAL... wouldn't that make it restricted? I would like to buy one of these and put a full sized stock on it.

For those of you that purchased in Canada, where were you able to find the Mare's leg?

Sorry for bringing this thread back and thanks!

Just got mine from P&D ENTERPRISES for $315.00. It arrived very well packed and quite fast and it is a very nice gun.

Got mine from Wanstalls, I think they deemed it non-res cause you need two hands to reload it. Pretty cool gun but hard to shoot with no stock. I have since sold mine and bought a youth version coming in at 33" OAL.

We have a Golden Boy LR and a Frontier LR (octagonal barrels on both)... We love these guns... But I DO want to pick up and LR Mare's Leg and put a carbine stock on it... These lever guns are just a load of fun to shoot and Henry makes a great product, from a fit/finish/function perspective.
