Henry

if I may threadjack just a wee bit, my brother wants a .22LR in lever action and currently he's considering the Marlin Golden 39A, which is a heck of an expensive gun when compared against the offerings of Henry. is the Marlin that much better, or should he be open to considering the Henry options? He hasn't because in the thread he made, there wasn't much said about Henry, so he has it in his head that perhaps they're not that good.

No. .22 rimfire levers load through a port in the tube magazine after you remove the plunger, same as Henry's BigBoy rifles.

Yes the Marlin 39 is worth the price, it is an extremely well made rifle.

As for my opinion of the Henry rifles in .17 HMR, if I remember right, they call it the Varmint Express. It has a cantalever scope mount attatched to the barrel. I think it looks like Hell. Scopes just look weird on these rifles, unless of course you were to go with a traditional styled scope, perhaps one by Leatherwood? In my opinion, as much as I love these rifles, for the money you will be better served by a bolt action CZ or equivilant in the .17 HMR.

My buddy has the Henry Golden boy .17hmr, and it shoots awesome. Deadly accurate, and handles very well because its so short. I'm almost regretting my Savage thumbhole .17hmr...except it's too cool!

I do not have any experience with the 17HMR's but I have a 3 of the Henry's in 22, and 2 of the original Ithaca (Erma) 72 Saddlering carbines that they were copied from.

They are relatively inexpensive, accurate, and reliable. Furthermore, they are very slick right out of the box. The triggers are a little gritty and heavy compared to the Ithaca's (crisp 2 lbs), but they can be cleaned up in an hour.

The only shortcoming is that the barrel bands are plastic, and the receivers are painted. However, for the price they are a hell of a gun.

I cannot see that the 17HMR's are any less of a gun, other than the cantilever scope mount looks bad.

Yup they are plastic bits, but apparently its easy to get henry to send you metal ones for free.
Probably one the smoothest nicest actions ive ever felt.
For the price I love it. Mines in 22.

Nope. Why would he be disapointed? Could you imagine trying to fumble around loading those little cartridges through a side port? The standard tubes are very easy and quick to use.

very easy and quick to use. HOW SO? From reading and looking at how a tube magazine works the follower and spring would be a PAIN in the but to put back in unless the bullets go in an inner tube first then you drop that in the gun.

Anyone here that has a Lever action .22 and is will to describe in detail how you load a lever action .22 please do so as I'm completely baffled how it could be quick and easy.

And Mr. Friendly leave me and my .22 alone
