Hi,

I see that a couple of site sponsors have the Hera-Arms AR15 5.56 Nato 5/30 Round Polymer Magazine (Gen I) for about $15 each. I'm in the market for some 5/30 magazines for plinking at the range. How do these hold up? Your thoughts?

Wolverine supplies has gen 2 for $10 a piece. Ignore the idiot on the EE selling them for $30 each...

They work great, no issue for me. Out of 6 rifles, they drop free on 5. Aero lower is tight.

Thanks. How are they pinned?

Pinning is very good actually (nice and flush, black rivet so it blends in)...I can get 5 in no problem and insert on a closed bolt. Also should be noted that you need to buy the 10 pack to get them for $10/each from Wolverine (otherwise they're $15)

Weird 7 of the 10 I bought are fine. 3 of them fit 5 rounds but have trouble picking up the first round. I also ran into an issue this weekend where one pushed to far in the mag well and jammed up the rifle. Luckily it wants in there to tight , was able to pull it free. Wonder if this a warranty issue?

If your mags won't go into your rifle with 5 rounds on a closed bolt you unfortunately have mags that were pinned to 5 instead of the usual 5.5.
You have 2 options, you can either always insert a loaded mag on an open bolt and then release the bolt without riding it home (which you should never do anyway), or you can remove the rivet and install a new rivet slightly lower on the opposite side. You will have to take the mag apart and do a bunch of measuring to the bottom of the follower with 5 rounds in the mag (no spring) and messing around to get it right but it really isn't that hard.
Don't worry about creating a prohibited device by removing the rivet. What you do in your home is your business and unless you go to the range and run 30 rounds through your rifle in front of a bunch of witnesses no one but you will even know you did it. You are repairing your magazine not altering it.
If you find that the new rivets are interfering with insertion into the magwell you can file them down till they don't rub but make sure you don't go too far. Don't use a dremel as it will heat up the rivet and soften the plastic. Also make sure your rivets go through far enough to block the follower but not far enough to interfere with the spring.

Good luck

Oh my god children are going to die if you remove that rivet. (Add sarcasm)

Anyone else having a problem with the some of the mags being to tight with 5 rounds in and even pushing to far up the mag well?

I had an IMI mag do that to me on Friday. I didn't have any issues with my P-Mags. A visual inspection leads me to believe the the height of the P-Mag above the mag catch notch is higher than on the IMI. Maybe you've got some varying heights.
