Here's a unique Smith & Wesson!

[Billy The Kid]

This is a very unique Smith & Wesson (I'd say it's an "N" frame) that I picked up a while back. It's an International Line Launcher that was made to shoot a line from one boat to another. It will also shoot 12 gauge flares . And the best part of all - it requires no registration as it is classed as a signalling device!!!

Anyone else ever come across one of these?

I have no idea where to get the line thrower ammo. I did get 6 flares with it though...

I've seen a couple of them at gun shows over the years, but I'm afraid I have no data on them. I would go to the S&W collectors forum and post the pics there asking for info, you should get some answers pretty quick, those guys are quite sharp. - dan

I'm told that you can shoot 2 1/2" 12 gauge shotshells out of it but I can't say for sure.

The Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson, under "miscellaneous S&W items", lists a "MODEL 270 PYROTEX LINE-THROWING GUN" - "Similar to the Model 209 series of gas guns, pistol configuration with long barrel with attached handle, designed to launch between ships a large wooden-tipped projectile bearing a line, or other applications. Exc. to NIB (US)$500-$650."

Wow! Whomever is armorer to Underworld, take notice.
