Good afternoon Gents,

Any of you can tell me more about this rifle? Labeled as Herstal, SAFN 49, serial number 6039.

Is there any possible links with canadian army and where it was use mostly? I do not know this rifle model at all.

Thanks.

They were primarily used by Belgium in .30-06. Other countries that used them were Columbia (.30-06), Argentina (originally 7.65x53 Mauser, then converted to 7.62 Nato (which also added a 20rd detachable magazine) locally), Venezuela (7x57 Mauser), Luxemburg (.30-06), and Egypt (7.92x57 aka 8mm Mauser). There might be a couple other countries I missed but those are the big ones.

This one is chambered in .30-06. It is not mine, it belongs to a museum that almost know nothing about it. I don't even know if it's functional! I might drive to the museum in order to make sure the labeling is correct.

Thanks for the input!

If the museum ever decides to fire it, it's worth getting a two piece firing pin for it - one of the only major flaws the gun had was to break its single piece firing pin, jam the pin in the forward position and OOB fire. Two piece pin solves the problem. The guns were something of the pinnacle of the battle rifle evolution before the transition to the FAL-AK-AR era. It's the father to the FAL if that gives you an idea about its sturdiness.

Does it have a crown over an A or B over ABL on receiver over the chamber?
