I have some recently purchased Herter's 9mm and the packing styro tray is a dead match for the trays in my Winchester white box. I'll check the headstamp soon to see what that reads, but the box sizes match up perfectly as well so I'm comfortable that its Winchester made.
No this is incorrect. S&B has made some of the Herters ammo. Some is Wolf, too if steel cased. However, if it says made in the USA, it's made by Winchester.
I'm looking forward to picking up a box of 30-30 to test out. At $1 per round, it's a good deal if it's any good!
I picked up a few of Cabela's Herters rifle cases for, I think, $16 and they're totally fine for a budget option. I'm hoping for the same from the ammo.
I tried some of the .22LR last summer and couldn't get it under 1" even with my B22. It's copper wash 36gHP and I pulled 3 FTFs (out of many) and found loose primer chunks and slops on the case inside. Not recommended. I also used some of the .223 in 55JHP and 62gSP and it stayed under 2MOA at 180yds - with 4-12x40 BDC scope, not really an "accuracy" reticle. In my Rem 700 SPS-TAC .308 I only got 3MOA @ 180yds with the 180gSP using 4-12x40 BDC, so I would say OK for practice or hunting under 180yds. JMO
I picked up a box of Herters 308 at Cabelas and it was getting AWFUL groups. Thought my scope was coming loose or something until I shot a few left over federal rounds which grouped fine. I took the rest of the Herter rounds out of the foam and inspected them and many of them had dents in the cases. The ammo was bought at cabelas and I shot it within a week. The rounds are in foam and seemed pretty protected anyways but I never dropped the ammo and never took it out of the foam until right before I put it into the rifle. I have never heard of this and can't think of any explanation for it. Anyone have a similar experience?
