Hevi-shot Turkey Loads

I've been hunting turkeys for a few years and have never really found anything better than the Winchester Double X Magnum turkey loads. I use the 3 inch 2 oz #5, 1125 FPS and Lebarons sell them usually about 13-14 bucks on sale. Dropped a 23 pounder at 42 yards last year.

Remington turkey magnum works for me. Its lead all you need to do is hit em with #5's and they drop with any extra full and previously patterned gun for that shell in choice

Χ2!

Although I read that WIN is coming out with a new lead load called Long Beard XR that uses an epoxy instead of buffer. Some people are saying you get almost the same pattern as Hevi but at a fraction of the cost. As soon as I get some, some paper gonna die...

Motion seconded! I have been reading about the Long Beard XR and can't wait to get out and do some patterning.

I'm currently using Winchester Supreme. 3.5" 2oz, #5shot 1300FPS. I have it patterened to 40 yds, but didn't want to push it much further than that. That's why I was looking for hevi-shot, I was told it would kill out to 50 yds. Any thoughts on using the Supreme to 50 yds?

Not sure who would ship them...Try Cabelas Canada or Bass Pro in Toronto. Like I said, not sure about BP shipping but they should have it.... good excuse for a road trip! Sail Ottawa might have it to.
Not that this thread asked but I'm digging the hevi 13s, they bad medicine! Lmao

These loads must be very popular amongst the shotgun enthusiasts. I was recently in Calgary & looked for these 12 gauge turkey hevi-shot loads & number 4 buckshot in a 3 inch shell. I could not find either one and settled for Federal 3 inch 1 7/8 ounce of BB lead.

for varmints btw.....

Cheers!

Yep! Light payloads actually produce some pretty remarkable patterns out of the super tight chokes and most of the time they give up very little range compared to the magnums.

I use a custom .650 choke and have a killing pattern beyond 50 yards. However most birds I shoot are less then 25 yards

Thanks for the help. I am in Nova Scotia, so Bass Pro is a bit much of a road trip, and my understanding is that Bass Pro only ships their products out of the states....therefore no ammo comming across the boarder. Meaning they won't ship from a Canadian store. I'd settle for Hevi 13 if I knew who carried it. I've spent countless hours on the internet and on the phone trying to locate some. I've had so many stores try to sell me buckshot and BB, it's unreal. It's no problem for a shop to ship ammo across the country, they just can't do it through Canada Post, it has to be a courier as it is classed as a dangerous good.

That's why I added in the part about the road trip, it was my attempt at humour. Guess I'm not going to quit my day job to go on the just for laughs tour...Bwahahaha:D
I got ya, buddy. I wouldn't mind the drive if it was only 5 or 6 hours. Heck, I'm even tempted to drive to Maine and buy some and then take them back down with me when I go there turkey hunting.
This will be so much easier when Bass Pro and Cabelas opens in Moncton next year. At least that is only a 3 hour drive.

Question here friend. What is the largest size shot that you would dare to fire through that extra-full choke?

just curious

It was designed for hardened #5 lead. I can safely shoot #4 lead thru it. It adds a lot more felt recoil and shreds the wads of my skeet loads so much that people have to stand back. The ports cut the wad and blow the peices out sideways. With #8 shot I can get a 8" pattern at 25 yards. 10" group at 30 yards with 1 1/4 oz #5. It cost a fair bit but it's worth it for turkey shoots. The guy has. .633 choke for #7.5 an smaller. That's a 12 ga choke at. 633. I can't post his site but his name is Wilson precision
