I got in the mail today a Remington 700 S/S 338 Win mag. The shipper removed the bolt when he shipped it, But it looks like he got the bolt out without either dryfiring it or decocking it. The cap at the back of the bolt is twisted about 45 degrees to the left ( when looking at the top of the bolt as if you were putting it back into the rifle) past the small indent designed to hold the mechanism back into the larger slot. The firing pin is also exposed. I know how to get this back with a pair of pliers on a model 70, but how do I do this on a 700.

I'm not 100% sure but I thought you just pulled back and twisted (with pliers if needed), I don't have a 700 here right now to verify.

No pliers required.I simply hook the rear of the firing pin follower on my loading table and pull out on the bolt. Then slip a dime or penney into the slot on the firing pin follower(behind the shroud) to hold it in place and you can easily turn it until the slot lines up.Then simply remove the coin by twisting it or snagging the follower and pulling out again. This is also the first step to disassembling a 700 bolt for degreasing or cleaning.
