Say guys I just picked up one of these in a Model 70. Just wondering how the felt recoil might compare to 30-06 or 308, calibers that I have shot. Thanks FS

Gatehouse is right, it will recoil a little more, and you should just try it to see how it feels. I've got a stainless/synthetic model 70 classic in 300 wsm and find the "felt" recoil quite a bit less than a 300 win mag from a rem 700, or browning A bolt. It's not a heavy recoil rifle by any means.

Got one in a savage heavy barrel and it thumps enough to keep me from spotting shots but not enough to to make it tiring to shoot. I just put a brake on it and that should tame it down nicely. As for the 300 wsm it is proving to be very accurate. I haven't played much with seating depths yet and it is already giving me .3 to .4 's at 100.

My 300 weatherby definitely pounds harder

My Tikka T3 Lite is brutal with 180 grn bullets but quite comfy with 165 grn. The Tikka is a light gun though so a heavier gun might be more tolerable. Tikka's need a better recoil pad on 'em. Having said that, it is only uncomfortable from the bench while field firing is not so much an issue. Gun is accurate as heck!! Love the cartridge.

Ive shot a couple Model 70 300 WSM's, one a Fwt and the other a SS classic. Both were tolerable. I cant remember ever shooting a 300 Win Mag, and have never had the urge to own such a thing

Thanks guys. Apparantly there is a smith in Manitoba that does remarkable porting work, some one has suggested that I go that route. I think I'll inquire.FS

I think my .300 WSM Browning compisite stalker has a pretty mild recoil, noticably less than the last couple of .300 WM rifles that I've owned. I don't think the recoil is enough to bother most folks, unless their really recoil sensitive. I would also recomend trying it before porting or muzzle break. I'm very happy with the cartridge, if the 30.06 is the standard do everything in North America round, the .300 WSM will do it all just a little better.

I found my browning tolerable after I put a limbsaver pad on it, that gun shot 168 gr tsx at 3125 and killed everything I pointed it at. I find recoil to be virtually the same as my Sako AV 300 Win mag.

Oh ya I'm going to put a Limb saver on it for sure, and as far as porting goes how does that ruin the gun? I was under the impression that with this newer process that it some how reduces the felt recoil but does not give the large amount of muzzel blast that a threaded brake does, just what I have heard.

Porting can hurt your hearing.

Do you have a medical problem with your shoulder? If you are healthy the recoil won't actualy injure you.

So why trade something that can't hurt you for something that can?

.....................X2. I'd rather take a shot in the shoulder rather than a high pitched squealing in my ear for the next day or so in the bush after downing an animal.

Shoot it first, you may find that it doens't bother you. If it does, trade it for a 308;)

Never port a gun. It wrecks a perfectly good firearm. Sure it's another story if you're shooting a .50 BMG.

The 300 WSM doesnt' kick that much but it can be severly affected by the weight of the rifle. I have one in a winchester featherweight and it does kick quite a bit. I wouldn't shoot 20 rounds back to back without a nice recoil pad.

I've also shot them in heavier models like a model 70 with a laminate stock. The extra wieght absorbs the recoil just fine and it doesn't kick any harder than any other 30 cal.

If you're only going to pop off 2 or 3 rounds at a game, suck it up and get a better recoil pad. Porting a rifle like that will eliminate about 80% of any future resale opportunities.

I do 20-25 rounds @ the range with no problems. I am reloading for a moose round. I shoot another gun while the barrel cools ( 3 shot groups). I have a model 70 SS. Laminate stock is not ready yet but will be on it soon.

Whew wee guess portings not such a great Idea ! Gate I have a Rem VS in 308 and a 7x57 , 25-06, 30-06 husky. Just wasn't sure about the recoil as the new gun is a model 70 featherweight, stainless, wood stock.
Well lads how about a factory load to break in my new arm, Thanks FS
