Ok Gun Heads, you have exactly 48 hours to convince me. If you haven't read my posts before, they are pretty much the same. I have a 5r milspec with a PST-025 stock and a jewell benchrest trigger. My plan in the beginning was to customize the 700 with a few parts such as a Krieger MTU barrel and a blueprinted action and whatever else it needs to give it the look and results of a custom shooter.

But, i was spoiled by my TRG buddy and got to shoot his rig and was very impressed. Both rifles fit me well and i am comfortable behind both. Other then what i read, i hear nothing but good for the TRG. The only info i cannot find is about the action and what they do to make it so good.

It would probably be more cost effective i think to modify the 5R but i really like the TRG-22. I am an ultra noob about gunsmithing. I understand what i read but i really don't know who to send it to to get the work done on it. My current rifle is 0.5 MOA no problem when i do my part and i take it out to 1160 and knock out 8 inch balloons which I am happy with. I probably don't need to customize the 5r until another couple thousand rounds. I am ready to do one or the other so if any gunsmiths or trg owners have some say then by all means share your input.I need some input on guys who've customized a 700 action and/or went with a trg 22. Maybe some gunsmiths can weigh in. Cheers. Wednesday the 11th will be the closing of this thread.

PS Hey Tomochan, you are a very bad influence on me.Hahaha.The balloons might have a new toy to worry about.

IMO - Out of respect for US Snipers, there is no half-assing a M24 clone, do it right or don't do it at all. BTW a proper clone is up in the 5000$ range or more.

I can give you full specs from my death from afar book collection, which is pretty much the best source for info on marine sniping and equipment.

Well if you can consistently hit 8" balloons at 1160 yards with a stock 5R, I don't think you need to customize that 5R?

I have never ventured into a custom gun before. Most of what i read by the gunsmiths on there site is 0.5 moa guarantee. Good. I can shoot the trg like that, i can shoot my gun like that. Ain't blowing smoke up my you know what here, but thats just the way it is for me at the moment. Is gunsmithing worth it or is the price of a good factory rifle worth it. I have NO EXPERIENCE WITH A GUNSMITH OR A CUSTOMIZED GUN. So i am looking for guys who had a 700 gunsmithed or a guys who had a customized 700 and went to a trg in the end. Here is my concern. When people say customize to me they might as well say "cheeseburger no pickles and extra mustard" I am looking for the guys who did a 700 and got a good result and what they did and who they used or i am looking for a the trg owner who has shot customize guns and can compare the 2.

Death from afar is the best read anybody can do.

As the guy who was the 'bad influence' with the TRG I guess I should offer an opinion. You have an excellent shooting rifle as is - probably as consistently good as a .308 is going to be - and a TRG or custom Remy 700 may not be that much better. If you go custom you can get a Krieger or Shilen or similar from members like Obtunded or Mystic and guys like Guntech for example can put it all together. Machinist on this site has a nice R5 that sports a Mick McPhee installed and made barrel and that is a sweet rig. There is a member - perhaps it is Oldsmobiler but I can't recall for sure - that has a real nice M24 clone but, as a previous poster said, you are looking around 5K for that.

FWIW, I would keep the R5 you have in the configuration you have and spring for a TRG. Shoot both and down the road make a decision on what to keep.
