hey guys a right oil for an open gun

There's lots of choices and preferences. Basically, you want a good synthetic that is not prone to drastic viscosity changes in different temperatures. It should also be sticky and able to suspend dirt and grime so that it can be easily wiped off. Currently I'm using Slide Guide (light) on my rails and major wear parts, and Gun Butter on springs and such. But you will get different opinions from everyone.

I have been looking for a better firearms lubricant for the last several years. The products that I had been using were affected by our local weather conditions and I was experiencing the occasional lubrication failures, (dry gun), problems. To compensate for this I was over lubricating the firearm, which also can cause problems.
At the 2007 IPSC Nationals Championship I was given a sample of GunButter. After reading the reviews about the product and seeing who was endorsing I decided to give it a try. The first time I used GunButter I noticed straight away that the slide was smoother and that the trigger felt lighter. I used the product for the 2008 season and I was impressed. I like RHT Speed Metal by CR Speed. Yeah, I sell it, but I tried it and liked it. I've tried greases like slide glide; too messy and oils like FP-10 - which seem to drain out of the gun by the next morning. The speed metal's thickness keeps it in the gun longer and it works well.

Like "R" said everyone is different. I myself use a multiple of oils. On my open "Para's" I use Prolix and Double Tap oil (I find to be the same as Prolix), on my Standard "Para's" I use CR Speed Metal, and on my Glock's and just about every other hand shooting iron I have I use Lucas. Now in my rifles that's a different story. I use and only use Militec-1.

I am using the same oil that double tap sells, ( a high quality synthetic) on all my guns open and standard. I have not had a malfunction in about 2 years, maybe more( there are many reasons for this as well) and good oil and lots of it is a main reason even at this years nats where my reverse plug broke and 1/2 my spring was hanging out the front of my open gun on a 32 round stage...no malfunction.

HAH! That reminds me when my father bought his last gun off Matt McLearn, I asked what kind of oil to use. He also said 10W30...but synthetic...
+1 slide glide stays right where you put it with very little run off.. I find that the dirtier it gets the better it gets.

Hey, it works. STP motor oil treatment right out of the bottle (not mixed with anything) works well also. It's thick, so it gives a nice hydraulic feel to looser fitting slides.

5W-40 Diesel synthetic, SVI standard gun. Used to use FP-10 (also a synthetic), but the diesel oil is cheaper.
there are three thicknesses.. never had a problem with the light in cold
