Hey guys - First firearm troubles

Hey coming here from Ontario! I'm about to go for the course this month and came here to discuss the perfect first firearm handgun. I've done some research and Springfield XDm .40 caught my eye. Although there are many types and you know...I'm so NEWB :p

Just found out what Tactical compact etc. are. What does the barrel size difference do?

Is it possible to have this ordered in any firearm store? from there "I'll" be customizing it, adding grip and probably a refinish etc still need more research and advice. I'll definitely be adding grip like this

I wonder if the shooting range gives tips how to shoot accurately :p

There are more educated folk in the forum who would be better to answer your questions, but I can give a couple a shot ;)

You should be able to purchase that handgun from any store in Canada as soon as you get your rPal (I'm going to assume that you're doing the none restricted AND restricted course).

Barrel diameter would allow you to but a larger projectile down it, barrel length... *shrug* Better sight picture I guess?
 
Welcome to the forum. It sounds like you are quite excited to get into firearms, and that's great, but just to clarify. . . Are you looking for your first firearm or your first handgun? Either way, a .22LR might be your best friend for a bit so you can burn a few thousand rounds cheap and get to know what you like. Lots of firearms will "catch your eye" as you stated, but I would caution against starting out with a .40. The recoil may or may not be an issue, but the cost to feed it will be for sure, unless you are starting out reloading as well.

All the answers you seek can be found in there. Doesn't hurt to do some forum searches either, just make sure you go into the "advanced" and change the date range. If you don't do that all you"ll get is a friggin headache.

As has been stated, a little patience can go a long way. If I was asked my opinion of a good "starter" pistol, either a 22 LR or a used .357 revolver. You can shoot cheap .38 special and fun loads in .357 interchangeably. You may think you will not want it forever but I bet you will keep it...

When these guys talk about price, they are talking about the cost of ammunition, .40 caliber ammunition is expensive. Most guys will start out with a .22 caliber handgun and move up from there, a box of 50 .40 cal will run $25 - $50, a box of 50 .22 cal will run $3 - $5. Most guys who own large caliber handguns will still have a .22 cal to fill in the time and because they are just plain FUN!
Barrel lenght is going to effect both accuracy and recoil - the longer the barrel, the more accurate it will be also, the longer or heavier the barrel, the less recoil you will feel.
I would suggest talking to guys here and watching youtube videos (just type in whatever firearm you are interested in and there will sure to be a video) also, check the mentor section on CGN, maybe one of these boys will take you to the range and bust your cherry. Do your reserch, if you're in Ontario, you have lots of time, it will probably be close to a year before you've got your own firearm in hand.

Welcome. I reccommend doing alot of reasearch on the guns you plan to purchase and make sure parts are readily available fo them. I was in the same boat as you and bought my 1st handgun becuase it was "pretty" and relativly cheap. It was a Taurus 24.7 pro in .40. I won't go into massive details, but knowing what I know no I wouldn't buy it again. Parts are nearly impossible to get for most taurus guns in canada and taurus won't ship parts to canada....

Lots of people on here are XD haters. They do have some parts that will break, but as long as you know that and are prepared to deal with that it's not a big issue as you can readily get parts for them in canada. I had one for all of 12 rounds before the trigger bar broke. to be fair i bought it used and the seller, while not happy about it (i wouldn't be either) gave me my money back and i let him deal with fixing it.
