Hey I just wanted to send a first message to say hi. I am a recent member who has finished his safety course and is patiently waiting for his PAL to arrive (mailed last week). Anybody know roughly how long it takes our wonderful government to issue a NR-PAL? Got referred here by a friend, seems like a good forum and a great place to get info. Can't wait to become a proud memeber of a seemingly endangered species, the Canadian gun owner. :D

Welcome and enjoy the ride. I'm from Yellowknife, but now live outside of Edmonton.

BTW, we are not an endangered species. We are growing in numbers and we are 1.3 million Canadian voters. Liberals and NDP would be examples of an endangered species because they under estimate us.

Howdy partner. Once you have all of the proper documents sent in for your PAL, you are usually looking at about 6 weeks. Things might be different now, but I think there was a 1 month wait, then it took them about 2 weeks to get to doing it.

As far as your questions about the shotguns, you will get more feedback in you post your shotgun questions in the shotgun sections. As far as pump shotguns go, there are quite a few good ones on the market. The most popular is the Remington 870, and then I would say the Mossberg, and Benelli pumps are next most common types. The Remington 870 and Mossberg 500 have been used by the military and law enforcement for decades. If your a lefty, then Browning BPS is a bottom feed/bottom ejection shotgun that have a really good reputation also.

welcome to CGN. I'll be relocating to Fort Smith next week, looking forward to leaving southern ontario and getting the career under way

Fort Smith, nice little quiet town I am told but have not been there yet, only been up here a year and so far so good. Hey from reading your location sounds like you might be from NW Ontario...I grew in NW ONT have yet to find a more pristine, enjoyable natural environment especially in the late spring and summer.

No I grew up in 'rural' niagara region, if you can call it that now. I did my college course in thunder bay, and my family spent most of our vacation time on Manitoulin Island. So needless to say I have developed a liking to the north country and have been looking for a job in small towns located in NW ontario; northern BC AB Man. and Sask; Newfoundland; the YK and of course the NWT.

Lots of hunters and shooters in Fort Smith, THere is also a great range in Hay River(i am biased). Lots of hunting and fishing if you are interested too.
I am a long time northerner, currently trying to move back home to Hay River.

BTW nice Profile Pic Sirrus!!

My recollection of the Hay River range is that one needs a couple of gallons of bug dope, come spring - that would be in June, lol. Those new thermal aroma deterents might come in handy, so you don't peel the finish off your guns with hands covered in DEET. DEET'll eat almost any gun finish I've ever encountered.

Here's what they're like in the spring across Great Slave Lake in Yellowknife...

Forget the DEET - bring your 12 gauge! :p
